Volkswagen Tiguan Earns 5-Star Crash Test Rating

VW TiguanImage via Wikipedia

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced that the 2009 Tiguan has earned a 5-star crash test rating from the government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). NCAP is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Transportation, and they have provided consumers with vehicle safety information since 1978.

NCAP has primarily provided front and side crash test ratings, and more recently added a rollover rating -- all aimed at helping consumers in making their vehicle purchasing decisions. The rating results are relayed to consumers using an easily recognizable star rating system from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best a vehicle can achieve.

"Volkswagen is thrilled that our Tiguan has earned the highest crash test rating, 5-star, by the government -- providing further validation that Volkswagen produces some of the safest vehicles in the industry," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Our vehicles have numerous safety technologies that work to help prevent accidents whenever possible, and help protect our occupants when an accident is unavoidable," added Barnes.

Along with being one of the safest compact SUVs currently available in the marketplace the Tiguan also features the fun-to-drive handling and performance expected from a Volkswagen. The Tiguan comes with the award winning 2.0-liter TSI engine that delivers turbocharged acceleration and responsible fuel efficiency. European tuned suspension enables precise handling, while also providing a smooth and compliant ride. Just like all 2009 model year Volkswagen vehicles, the Tiguan includes a standard electronic stability control system that Volkswagen brands Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP).

Tiguan, like all 2009 model year Volkswagen vehicles, is also included in the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. Under this program all of Tiguan's scheduled maintenance, as described in its maintenance book, is covered for the length of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty -- three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Mercedes-AMG GmbH Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach ...Image via Wikipedia

Motorists looking for a car that combines outstanding performance with exhilarating driving dynamics may want to buy the new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG.

The distinguishing feature of the sports saloon over other vehicles in the E-Class range is the inclusion of an AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, while the vehicle also comes with the newly-developed AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension.

This engine will allow motorists to accelerate to 62 miles per hour in a rapid 4.5 seconds, while an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour can be reached.

Meanwhile, a decision to implement certain fuel-efficiency measures has helped the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG to reduce its fuel consumption by 12 per cent.

A further new development is the fitting of a speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering system, offering drivers more direct responsiveness and improved precision.

Motorists looking for additional sporty elements to their vehicle could also opt for some add-ons such as an AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid or a roller blind for the rear window.

Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz reveals that "AMG bodystyling accentuates the dynamic external lines with front and rear aprons and two twin chrome exhausts".

Opel Insignia ecoFLEX Sports Tourer

Adam Opel GmbHImage via Wikipedia

Green shoots continue to sprout on the Opel model line-up: Starting this fall, the especially environmentally friendly Insignia ecoFLEX will be available as a Sports Tourer. The elegant station wagon version of Europe’s 2009 Car of the Year sips in the combined cycle just 5.3 liters of diesel per 100 km and emits only 139 g CO2/km. (ecoFLEX sedan: 5.2 l/100 km, 136 g CO2/km). – while offering a load capacity of
up to 1530 liters.

All Insignia ecoFLEX models combine economy with driving fun. The 2.0 CDTI engine with the Clean Tech System delivers 118 kW/160 hp and has maximum torque of 380 Nm. The Insignia ecoFLEX Sports Tourer accelerates to a top speed of 215 km/h – three km/h faster than the normal version – and sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds.

The Opel Insignia ecoFLEX Sports Tourer can be ordered now, with prices starting at 28,690 euros (RRP incl. VAT) in Germany. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission, a longer final drive ratio, a range of aerodynamic optimizations and specially developed, 225/55 R 17” low-resistance Michelin tires. “The Insignia ecoFLEX is more than just a green car. It offers the same package of high driving performance, innovative technologies and comfort as the other Insignia models. And for this price, it has no serious competition – this is true for both the Sports Tourer and the sedans,” says Hans Demant, Managing Director, Adam Opel GmbH.

Just how parsimonious the new Opel Insignia ecoFLEX is, was highlighted at the sedans’ press launch in June. European journalists driving the Insignia ecoFLEX for two weeks in the region south of Frankfurt confirmed that the official factory figure of 5.2 liters of diesel per 100 km is very realistic. On the first part of the test circuit, consisting mainly of country roads from the Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg, most of the cars needed less than five liters of diesel. Some of the journalists really concentrated on their gas pedal behavior; one reporter from Croatia hit a record of 3.6 liters per 100 kilometers.

The new BMW X1

BMW created a new vehicle segment a decade ago when it launched the X5. That vehicle received critical acclaim at its launch and continues to this day as a market leader with 1.5million sold worldwide. The popular X3 followed in 2004 and the X6 spawned a new niche in 2008. Now BMW is poised to introduce the next derivative of the X model line-up with the X1.

The new BMW X1 takes its key styling cues and practicality from the X5 but shrinks it into a more compact and affordable package. The vehicle’s elegant lines and command driving position echo its larger stablemate, while the five-seat configuration and 1,350- litre boot space provide outstanding load-lugging capability.

Power comes from a choice of three diesel engines and, for the first time on a BMW X product, the option to have rear-wheel-drive (sDrive) or four-wheel-drive (xDrive).intake geometry. Third generation common-rail diesel technology ensures optimum combustion.

Milestones reached at Mercedes-Benz plant on A-Class and B-Class models

Mercedes-Benz B170Image via Wikipedia

Two production milestones have been reached at the Mercedes-Benz plant at Rastatt, with motorists in Germany and Great Britain to take deliveries of the landmark vehicles.

The 750,000th new-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the 500,000th B-Class are set to be delivered from the plant in June, proving that there is still significant interest from motorists in the vehicles.

Dr Klaus Maier, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "The A and B-Class continue to be very popular with our customers – you only have to look at their top ranking in the premium compact vehicle segment.

"At the beginning of the year, Mercedes-Benz also introduced the B-Class in China. It is proving outstandingly popular with Chinese customers and has already far exceeded our expectations."

Meanwhile, strong recent demand across Europe from the UK, Italy, Germany and France for vehicles from the plant has meant that it will continue to operate at full capacity until September.

The production team at the plant produce around 1,000 vehicles every day.

Among the benefits of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is that rear-seat passengers can profit from a raised seating position to ensure that they receive generous amounts of legroom.

The new BMW 316d ES Saloon

BMW 3 series DaylightImage by SOCIALisBETTER via Flickr

June 2009 heralds the launch of the most fuel efficient and cleanest BMW 3 Series the marque has ever produced. The new BMW 316d ES Saloon sets a new benchmark in the premium sector with its heightened blend of high economy, low emissions yet rewarding driving experience.

The BMW 316d is powered by a 1,995cc four-cylinder diesel engine that records 62.8mpg on the combined cycle. This class-leading economy figure is enough to give the car a possible range in excess of 800 miles between fill-ups. Factor in its CO2 emissions of just 118g/km and the vehicle becomes the most fuel efficient and cleanest BMW 3 Series ever.

However, every BMW still has to acquit itself in the performance stakes to meet customer expectations. A 116hp output figure and torque of 260Nm from 1,750rpm delivers a zero to 62mph time of 10.9 seconds. When combined with a top speed of 125mph and uncompromised dynamic performance this fulfils the promise of the EfficientDynamics programme. This efficiency comfortably eclipses competitor product from the likes of Audi and Mercedes. Power is transmitted to the road via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Low running costs are a key factor in the proposition of BMW 316d ownership. Aside from its parsimonious nature, the BMW 316d costs just £35 a year to tax courtesy of a band C Vehicle Excise Duty rank. A 13 per cent benefit-in-kind rating also ensures it makes economical sense for the business user. To put this in context, the BMW 316d with its CO2 emissions of just 118g/km and a P11D value of £23,240 means a 40 per cent tax payer is liable for £1,208 a year. A person in the 25 per cent bracket need only pay £755. Compare this to the award-winning BMW 318d and savings of £524 and £328 respectively can be made.

The BMW 316d ES Saloon comes as standard with the same specification as the current What Car? Green Car of the Year Executive Car category winner, the BMW 318d ES Saloon. This specification includes air-conditioning, multi-function leather steering wheel, front and rear ISOFIX child seat attachments, front foglights and the complete suite of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies as standard.

The new BMW 316d Saloon goes on sale in September priced at £23,330 OTR.

VW Golf VImage via Wikipedia

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced that the Rabbit has once again been named one of the "Top 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000" by Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com), a top rated consumer web-site that provides vehicle pricing and information. The annual accolade acknowledges automakers for producing vehicles that emphasize performance, safety, fuel economy, interior size, and comfort. This year the editors also selected vehicles with a growing emphasis on personality, versatility, and technology.

"Volkswagen of America is thrilled that our Rabbit has once again been recognized by Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com as one of the Coolest New Cars Under $18,000," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America. "The Rabbit truly embodies the Volkswagen Brand--affordable German engineering in a stylish and fun-to-drive package," added Barnes.

Since 2003, Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com has announced the "Top 10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000" to provide consumers a list of affordable and stylish vehicles. The editors at kbb.com compiled the list of qualifying vehicles using Kelley Blue Book's New Car Blue Book Values, which reflect real-world transaction prices and provides a useful comparison point as compared to the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

"The fun, refined and versatile Volkswagen Rabbit has found its way onto our Coolest Cars list yet again. This will be the last year, though, as a new, sixth-generation version of Volkswagen's venerable hatchback is set to show up for the 2010 model year and will again sport a 'Golf' nametag," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.

The 2009 Rabbit comes standard with a fun-to-drive 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine that delivers 170 horsepower and 177 lbs.-ft. of torque. The engine can be mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic®. Adding to the Rabbits fun-to-drive DNA is a multi-link rear suspension and an electro-mechanical power-assisted steering system that contribute to the vehicles agility and nimbleness. Regardless of which transmission is selected, the Rabbit's performance and fuel economy numbers add up to guilt-free fun. With the manual the Rabbit gets 29 miles per gallon (MPG) on the highway, and the automatic gets 30 mpg on the highway.

The Rabbit, like all 2009 model year Volkswagen's, is included in the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. Under this program all of the Rabbit's scheduled maintenance, as described in its maintenance booklet, is covered for the length of the new vehicle warranty--three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

The Formula One logo.Image via Wikipedia

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes will not be taking part in a breakaway series of Formula One next season as a deal has been reached between the teams and the FIA.

Some eight teams including Vodafone McLaren Mercedes recently revealed their intention to begin their own championship after motorsport boss Max Mosley refused to back down on plans to introduce a £40 million budget cap on teams.

However, a resolution has now been reached, which includes Mosley agreeing not to stand to be re-elected as the FIA President in October when his fourth term ends.

Mosley said: "There will be no split, there will be one Formula One championship. We have agreed to a reduction of costs.

"The objective is to get back to the spending levels of the early 90s within two years."

The peace deal, which ensures that Lewis Hamilton will be racing in Formula One next season, was arranged during a meeting in Paris which also involved Bernie Ecclestone and Luca di Montezemolo, the President of the teams association FOTA.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes could be a part of new championship

The Formula One logo.Image via Wikipedia

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes are one of eight Formula One teams threatening to begin their own championship from 2010, it has been revealed.

As world motorsport boss Max Mosley refuses to back down on his plans to introduce a voluntary £40 million budget cap, the teams have announced their decision of a rival championship.

Members of the Formula One Teams Association (Fota) have made the plans following a four-hour discussion prior to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend.

The teams said: "The teams have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 Formula One Championship. We’ve no alternative than to commence preparation for a new championship.

"It has become clear, however, the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 World Championship."

The statement from the teams also revealed that the biggest stars in the sport, alongside the largest sponsors, companies and brands will all be features of the new series.

Meanwhile, the FIA has announced that five teams, including Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, have until June 19th to convert their provisional entries into unconditional contracts or they could be excluded from the sport next season.

The Audi 2.0 l TFSI wins the “International Engine of the Year Award 2009”

Audi A4 B8Image via Wikipedia

  • Fifth win in a row for the Audi 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engine
  • Already over 1.3 million sold worldwide
  • Even greater torque and efficiency thanks to Audi valvelift system

For the fifth time in a row, a jury of 64 leading motoring journalists from over 30 countries has voted the 2.0-liter FSI the “International Engine of the Year” in the 1.8 to 2.0-liter category.

“A blend of performance and efficiency. An example to all engine manufacturers”, concluded the jury. It was particularly impressed by the way the Audi-developed engine combines pulling power, economy and excellent handling.

The latest version of the two-liter TFSI engine in the Audi A4, A5 and Q5 is equipped with the Audi valvelift system that regulates the valve lift in two stages. It acts on the turbo engine’s exhaust valves. Together with the intake camshaft that can be adjusted through 60 degrees, it improves the charge cycle and boosts pulling power. The driver experiences the Audi valvelift system as a technology designed to enhance driving fun – it guarantees a spontaneous, dynamic torque buildup all the way up from rock-bottom revs. This characteristic means the engine encourages the driver to shift up sooner, promoting lower revving and therefore a more economical driving style.

The 2.0 TFSI is available in performance categories ranging from 125 kW (170 hp) to 195 kW (265 hp) for the A3, S3, A4, A5 and A6 car lines, as well as for the Audi Q5 and TT. In its most powerful manifestation with an output of 200 kW (272 hp), the engine propels an Audi TTS Coupé, equipped with the optional S tronic dual-clutch transmission, from 0 to 100 kilometers (0-62.14 mph) per hour in just 5.2 seconds.

Audi was the first manufacturer in the world to combine gasoline direct injection with turbocharging in volume production. The success story of the 2.0 TFSI started in summer 2004, when it made its debut in the Audi A3 Sportback. Over the subsequent five years it was not only crowned “International Engine of the Year” on five occasions, but also the engine of choice for over 1.3 million customers.

Readers of German Car Magazine “sport auto” vote Porsche No 1 Four Times

LEXINGTON,OH - JULY 20: Johannes van Overbeek...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

The readers of “sport auto“, one of Germany’s leading car magazines, have chosen four sports cars from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, as the best cars in their respective categories. This year readers were able to choose among 260 sporting cars in sixteen categories for production vehicles and ten categories for tuned cars. 10,112 readers participated in the survey.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 received the clearest vote, with 37 per cent of all readers choosing the most sporting 911 as the No 1 in the category of coupés up to Euro 150,000. Approximately one-quarter of the jury chose the Boxster S as the best production cabriolet up to Euro 60,000 and the Carrera S Cabriolet as the top open-air car up to Euro 120,000. Receiving almost 18 per cent of all votes, the Porsche Cayman came No 1 in the category of coupés up to Euro 50,000, while the Carrera S came second – very close to first place – in the category of coupés up to Euro 100,000.

Just how much the readers of “sport auto“ appreciate Porsche’s outstanding competence comes out clearly through the fact that the Panamera was voted No 3 in the category of saloons over Euro 80,000 – although so far the Panamera has not even been launched into the market.

The German car magazine “sport auto“ has been requesting its readers to vote for the “Most Sporting Car of the Year” since 1980. In the first year readers were able to choose among 69 models in six categories, the Porsche 911 SC and the 930 Turbo scoring a double victory for Porsche right from the start in the very first year. In all, sports cars from Zuffenhausen have come right at the top no less than 44 times in the last 29 years.

The New Opel Astra

  • Opel’s dynamic design language newly interpreted for the compact class car
  • Driver-focused interior combines drama and warmth
  • High quality components and materials match upscale execution
Rüsselsheim. The new Opel Astra brings into the compact class its own interpretation of the brand’s award-winning design language of combining sculptural artistry with German precision first seen in the Insignia. Its strong sporty lines and elegant details add to a new handsome look.

The exterior of the new generation Astra, which debuts in September at the IAA in Frankfurt, boasts a strong cab-forward, fluid silhouette. Inside, high quality materials and a total re-think of the design add to the excitement of driving a compact car. Moreover, Opel has added innovative extras – higher quality materials, more storage, improved seats and safer bumpers – to give the Astra comfort, health and safety features not usually seen in the compact class.

“The design of the new Astra takes all the best Opel has to offer and delivers it to the compact class,” says Mark Adams, Vice President of Design for GM Europe. “We have built a five-door hatchback that is as beautiful as it is safe, comfortable and practical.”

Exterior design gives Opel philosophy a new twist

Designers have given Opel’s new philosophy an interpretation fitting for the compact class using the same wing and blade styling cues first introduced on the mid-sized Insignia. Sculpted into the side panels of the new generation Astra, the blade sweeps rear ward and upward, connecting with the side window line, giving the car balance and harmony. Eagle eye-shaped headlamps that encompass the prominent signature wing daytime running lights give the Astra face a low, sporty character.

A graceful flowing silhouette connects the muscular shoulder lines with an expressive rear to make it sporty yet elegant. On the front fascia, the next generation Astra re-interprets the new Opel face by using the small upper grille to frame the new Opel logo, while emphasizing the bigger, bolder lower opening so as to create a sportier look.

Inside, design cues used to create driver-focused styling

Echoing the flowing forms of the bodywork, the hallmarks of the interior are sweeping lines and shapes that are executed with care. Interior designers achieve that, for instance, by creating bold, dynamic shapes that use materials intelligently. Everything drivers and passengers touch has been given a refined, high quality feel. In addition, Opel has created two new progressive interior color and trim combination – Spice Red and Ocean Blue – especially for the Astra.

The interior also continues Opel’s recurring wing and blade motifs. In this execution, the blade theme is expressed in details like the shape of the door grab handles and the trim for gearshift molding and steering wheel. The wing design cue is immediately evident in the warm, inviting wraparound instrument panel that embraces front seat occupants. It arcs across the cabin into the top of the door moldings.

Health, safety and comfort added via storage, seats and bumper improvements

The Opel Astra has added practicality through greatly increased storage and clever solutions for a compact class car that include a mini glove box on the driver’s side and a drawer under the front passenger seat.

New, high quality seat technology brings added comfort and help to backs. In addition, safety was a major consideration in design. A new, intelligent bumper is intended to minimize damage in front and rear collisions, reducing injury to pedestrians and passengers and saving money in repairs and insurance.

Execution matched by great components and perceptual quality

Opel designers and engineers believe quality execution also must be matched by what the customer sees and feels. Such perceptual quality is particularly important in the interior, where the appearance and tactile properties of all materials must be on a par with their high standard of fit and finish.

The quality of the materials used in the new Astra is evident in such things as the grained, soft-touch surfaces, the textured panels, the quality of the décor, the chrome trim elements, and the feel of operating buttons and switches.

Quality in execution, quality in the materials used and quality as perceived by the customer add up to the new Astra’s upscale appearance. Together they deliver the sculptural artistry and German precision of Opel’s new design language.

New Mercedes-Benz CLS Grand Edition coming to UK in July

Mercedes-Benz CLS ClassImage by code_martial via Flickr

Interested buyers in the UK will have to be quick to snap up the newest edition of the world’s first four-door Coupe as only 560 vehicles from the latest Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class range are heading to the country.

Deliveries of the Mercedes-Benz CLS Grand Edition will begin in the UK in July, with the vehicle being more distinguished and powerful than all before it.

Five colour options are available to motorists including Palladium Silver for the first time with the CLS range, while star features of the vehicle are 18-inch AMG 5 spoke alloy wheels with a Titanium Grey finish, front grille louvers and headlamp housings.

Meanwhile, due to the success of diesel engines in the UK, this is the focus of the special edition vehicle, although 62 miles per hour can still be hit from still in 6.5 seconds, which is an improvement of half a second.

This has also been achieved at no greater detriment to the environment, with combined fuel consumption still sitting at 37.2 miles per gallon and 215g/km of carbon dioxide being generated.

Among the safety features of the CLS Grand Edition is the Cornering Light System, improving safety on tight bends by illuminating the area to the side of the vehicle.

An Active Light System also boosts visibility by allowing a driver to see 25 metres further around an extended bend.

Porsche wins “Best New Engine 2009 Award”

Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has been successful in the International Engine of the Year Awards. With its 3.8-litre power unit from the 911 Carrera S models, the sports car manufacturer has underpinned its position in a fie of high performance competitors, receiving the coveted “Best New Engine 2009 Award”. For eleven years now, this prize has been awarded by the British specialist journal “Engine Technology International” for outstanding engine characteristics.

With the new flat-six engines featuring direct fuel injection Porsche is raising the sportiness, efficiency and environmental compatibility of the 911 to an even higher level than before. The Carrera S for the first time also comes with Porsche's new double-clutch transmission (PDK). And despite an increase in power by 8.5 per cent, the PDK models reduce fuel consumption by more than 13 per cent and CO2 emissions by almost 15 percent.

Output of the 3.8-litre power unit in the S-models is up by 30 to 385 bhp (283 kW), pushing the extra-powerful S-version beyond the magic speed barrier of 300 km/h or 186 mph. Despite this supreme power and performance, the new models in the 911 range once again boast a significant reduction of fuel consumption, the 911 Carrera S Coupé with the PDK version offering even greater fuel economy with average fuel consumption of just 10.2 litres/100 km (combined overall fuel consumption to the EU5 standard).

AMG Performance Event - Mercedes Benz of OrlandoImage by hyku via Flickr

Mercedes-Benz and AMG both witnessed strong evenings at the recent International Engine of the Year Awards 2009 by claiming three accolades.

An independent jury of 64 motoring journalists from 32 countries are responsible for deciding the winners in 12 categories.

And two awards were gained by the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, as it was crowned as the Best Performance Engine, while walking off with the top prize in the Above 4 Litres category.

Meanwhile, the new four-cylinder diesel unit from Mercedes-Benz was a comfortable winner in the 2 to 2.5 Litres category.

Friedrich Eichler, Head of Engine and Powertrain Development at Mercedes-AMG, said: "These top rankings reflect the huge enthusiasm of our customers for the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine and the high-performance cars equipped with it - and they confirm the extremely positive test results in all the worldwide media."

Judge John Carey from Australia added that the Mercedes-Benz engine provides "effortless performance and unbelievably low fuel consumption".

Among the vehicles that can be bought under the AMG umbrella are the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG and the E 63 AMG Estate.

Audi A5 Sportback

The brand with the four rings leads the pack with a new vehicle concept: The Audi A5 Sportback combines the best of different automotive worlds. It is as emotional and elegant as a coupe, as comfortable as a sedan, and as practical as an Avant. The Sportback joins the Coupé and Cabriolet as the third member of the A5 model family – and at the same time creates a new segment. With an exciting design, great everyday utility and highly efficient and powerful TFSI, FSI and TDI engines, the A5 Sportback will arrive at Audi dealerships in September. The car will be open for ordering with an entry price of EUR 36,050 for the 2.0 TDI version. A version with an even more attractive price will follow in the middle of 2010. This will make the A5 Sportback the entry model for the A5 model range.

This will make the A5 Sportback the entry model for the A5 model range.

The A5 Sportback represents a milestone in car design. The five-door coupe excels in its elegant, elongated, sporty profile. The large hatchback fits perfectly into the tail-end styling. The spoiler lip and the diffuser insert provide contrast and emphasize the athletic tautness of the elongated contour. The coupe-like silhouette is the result of a roof section with a long, tapering roofline that is moderately lower by 36 mm (1.42 inches) than the A4 Sedan and of the short overhangs at the front and rear as well as the long wheelbase of 2,810 mm (9.22 feet) and the four frameless doors with their slim, dynamic window styling. The unusual hatchback design is distinctively emblematic of the vehicle’s excellent functionality. With the Sportback, the designers of the Avant are setting trends in tail-end design while combining sportiness, comfort and utility in a completely new way.

The unique functional concept in conjunction with the emotion-packed design creates a cutting-edge mix of coupe and Avant. The baggage volume of 480 liters (17.0 cubic feet) nearly equals that of the A4 Avant, and it has an impressive 980 liters (34.6 cubic feet) with the rear seatbacks folded down.

The A5 Sportback provides a full measure of comfort on all four seats and convenient entry and exit through every door. Despite the fact that its exterior height is less than that of the A4 Sedan and that its roof tapers at the rear, the Sportback has comparable headroom and legroom.

The powerplant of the A5 Sportback is another advance along the path of innovative technologies Audi has been charting: All engines are of the direct injection type – the diesel versions are sophisticated common rail TDI units while the gasoline engines are based on the FSI concept. All engines meet the EU5 exhaust emission standard. The diesel versions are equipped with particulate filters.

Initially the A5 Sportback will be available with a choice of two gasoline and three diesel engines. The two gasoline versions, the 2.0 TFSI quattro with an output of 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque and the 3.2-liter V6 quattro generating 195 kW (265 hp) are both equipped with the Audi valvelift system. This feature can produce more power and higher torque as well as lower fuel consumption.

The following engines are also available right from the start: the 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (170 hp), 350 Nm (258 lb-ft), a 6-speed manual gearbox and start/stop system, the 2.7 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), and the three-liter V6 TDI with 176 kW (240 hp) plus an enormous 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of maximum torque and quattro all-wheel drive.

The newly developed ESP control with electronic differential lock on the front axle ensures noticeably improved steering response as on the Coupé and Cabriolet and compensates effectively for change-of-load reactions - which increases driving safety.

The perfect addition to this technology package is the Audi drive select dynamic driving system – this allows the driver to choose between three different modes which influences the throttle response characteristics, the shift points for the seven-speed S tronic or multitronic transmissions, and supports the servotronic steering. If the vehicle is equipped with the MMI operating system, a fourth, freely programmable level is also available.

Audi drive select can only be ordered in conjunction with one or more of three additional technologies – adaptive shock absorber control, dynamic steering with continuously variable assistance and quattro with sport differential for the 3.0 TDI and 3.2 FSI versions.

Lewis HamiltonImage by Dwonderwall via Flickr

Lewis Hamilton has fronted a new campaign to encourage youngsters to drive safely and stick to speed limits when behind the wheel.

The Make Roads Safe campaign is hoping to cut global road death figures from the 1.3 million last year to 900,000 by 2020.

And Hamilton admitted that even he has made mistakes but from now individuals should take stock of their driving and think of the potential implications of their actions before carrying them out.

Speaking to the Times at the start of the campaign, the Formula One World Champion said: "The message I would try and send out is take a step back and think before you act. You could easily make a mistake and lose your friend’s life or your own life.

"It’s about being sensible and making the right decisions. If you want to have fun, go to a go-kart circuit."

Hamilton was also involved in the recent launch of the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge, Surrey.

Children as young as 12 are permitted to take part in the academy, which aims to prepare them for the demands that are a part of driving on public roads.

Opel Zafira BImage via Wikipedia

  • Packing up: Flex7 seating system guarantees maximum interior flexibility
  • With the kids: Twin Audio System offers individual entertainment programs
  • On the budget: Economical diesel and natural gas models help environment, too
Rüsselsheim. Long distance air travel is out. This summer, 78 percent of Europeans are planning to spend their holiday in Europe, according to a study by Europ Assistance Group. The Opel Zafira makes vacations easy, with plenty of storage space, individual entertainment programs to keep the kids happy and economical engines that leave enough money in the budget to enjoy the trip.

That tricky planning question of “What can we take with us, what do we have to leave at home?” doesn’t even come up with the Opel Zafira. The compact van with luggage capacity of up to 1820 liters can take on lots of holiday baggage or has enough room for up to seven occupants. Thanks to the Flex7 system the sixth and seventh seats can be retracted into the floor so that a flat loading area is created without hassle. Even when the holiday destination has been reached, the Zafira offers the flexibility to choose between a full house of passengers or maximum transport capacity, like bulky beach equipment.

To optimally secure and store all equipment, the FlexOrganizer – Opel’s luggage compartment manager – is available to safely fix dividers, storage boxes and nets. Bicycles can be transported on the rear bike rack or on the roof with the easy bicycle-lift system.

Relaxed travel thanks to individual entertainment systems

Diverse infotainment systems and equipment choices on the Zafira ensure that even the longest drives don’t have to be boring for the kids or become torture for parents. While the driver can plan the best route via the Opel CD 70 or DVD 90 Navigation System, the rest of the family can relax to surround sound from seven loudspeakers – be it from the radio or an MP3-compatible CD player.

For kids with competing musical interests, the Twin Audio System in the second row of seats has two headphone plug sockets, saving quarrelling and parental nerves. Reading lamps mounted even for the rear-most seats help any bookworms on board when it gets dark outside. And beverage holders in every row make sure that a refreshing drink is always close at hand.

The Zafira’s optional panorama roof creates a whole new sense of space. Not only does it offer an all-round view, the roof also comes with integrated storage compartments with space for travel accessories like small games or mini-computers. Its integrated power shade system blocks strong sun rays. It acts in tandem with the optional heat-absorbing glazing in the rear and air conditioner or electronic climate control to keep the interior temperature pleasant and comfortable.

Economical engines – safety and comfort for the whole family

Selecting the right engine with low fuel consumption ensures that even long trips don’t overburden the vacation budget – or the earth’s atmosphere. Particularly economical and environmentally compatible options include the Zafira 1.7 CDTI ecoFlex with 125 hp and average consumption of just 5.3 liters per 100 km. The Zafira 1.6 CNG Turbo ecoFlex with 150 hp costs even less with comparable consumption because natural gas prices are low.

For families who travel with a trailer, a removable trailer hitch can be mounted on the Zafira. The trailer stability program makes driving safe and comfortable by guarding against swinging motions. And vacationers to the Alps will appreciate the advantages of the hill start assist feature.

The steering-linked bi-xenon curve light AFL offers better visibility in the dark and in bad weather. Drivers can make the trip even more relaxing by engaging cruise control, a standard feature on the “Innovation 110 Years” model. A properly set cruise control function also can help prevent speeding violations and protect the vacation budget from unplanned and unpleasant expenditures.

Seventy-Five Years Ago: Porsche Receives the Order to Construct the Volkswagen

IMG_4243Image by amcgore via Flickr

22 June 1934 was not only one of the most important days in the early corporate history of the Company now known the world over as Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, but also the day that changed the history of the entire automotive industry: It was on that day that
"Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH, Konstruktionen und Beratung für Motoren- und Fahrzeugbau" received the go-ahead from the "Reichs-
verband der Automobilindustrie (RDA)" (the Association of the German Reich of the Automotive Industry) to construct and build the Volkswagen.

In those difficult economic times, automobile constructors had had the idea time and again to build an inexpensive car for the population at large. One of them was Ferdinand Porsche who, in the course of his career, had constructed no less than seven compact and small cars for various manufacturers. As the ultimate result of these projects in terms of technology and design he finally developed the Volkswagen concept in 1933, presenting the car to the Reich Ministry of Transport on 17 January 1934 in his "Study for the Production of a Germany People's Car" (quite simply, the "Volkswagen").

At the end of the day the political leaders back then were also convinced of the concept Porsche and his constructors had developed. So five months after submitting the study, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH received the order to develop the car at the initiative of the Reich Government. And while the original agreement was to build only one prototype of the Volkswagen, the RDA increased the order on 7 December 1934 to three cars assembled in the garage of Ferdinand Porsche's private residence.

The first Volkswagen prototype, the V1 (V = Versuchswagen or Test Car), was ready to go almost exactly a year after the official development brief, Ferdinand Porsche presenting the saloon to an RDA Technical Commission on 3 July 1935. The second test car, a convertible code-
named the V2, set out on its maiden trip on 22 December 1935.

After construction of three further Volkswagen prototypes code-named V3 had started in February 1936, resistance to the project began to build up in the RDA. Quite simply because, with its central tube frame, the torsion bar suspension invented by Porsche and the air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine at the rear, the Volkswagen was now seen - and feared - as a serious competitor to existing models. A further series of 30 prototypes (VW30) was nevertheless built in 1937 by the then Daimler-Benz AG and tested in a large-scale trial covering a total of 2.4 million test kilometres.

Contrary to the first idea to build the Volkswagen in a joint venture of German car makers, the Reich Government decided on 4 July 1936 to build a separate plant for the new car, the Volkswagenwerk. So the "Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH" or "Gezuvor" for short (the "Company for Preparation of Deutsche Volks-
wagen Ltd") was established on 28 May 1937.

As one of the three managing directors of Gezuvor, Ferdinand Porsche received the official order for the technical development and planning of the future production plant, with construction work starting in May 1938 in the small town of Fallersleben, now Wolfsburg.

On two study trips to the USA, Ferdinand Porsche gained the latest know-how on modern automobile production and the rules to be observed in the production process.

By the second half of 1938 the prototypes, now having reached the level of VW38, had achieved a point in the development process hardly different from the subsequent production model. So now potential purchasers were able to save five reichsmarks a week for the Volks-
wagen in the meantime re-christened as the "KdF-Wagen" forming part of the German Reich's "Kraft durch Freude" or "Strength through Happiness" strategy.

Priced at an extremely low 990.- reichsmarks, the Volkswagen was really to be everybody's car, easily affordable for the average purchaser. But due to the War not one of the roughly 340,000 investors reached his savings target and not one single Volkswagen was delivered to a private customer.

Starting in 1939 Porsche developed further variants of the Volkswagen parallel to the "KdF-Wagen" which were however intended for military use. Indeed, more than 60,000 of the jeep-like Kübelwagen, the amphibian Schwimmwagen, and the higher-ranking Kommandeur-
wagen (the commander's car), some of which featured all-wheel drive, were built by the end of World War II.

Another model based on the Volkswagen was the Type 64 Berlin-Rome Car built in 1939. This motorsport version of the Volkswagen was developed for the Berlin-Rome long-distance race planned for September 1939 and is acknowledged by car historians as the great-
grandfather of Porsche sports cars today. With its streamlined aluminium body and upgraded VW boxer engine, the Berlin-Rome Car reached a top speed of 145 km/h or 90 mph.

Regular production of the civilian Volkswagen started in Wolfsburg in summer 1945 - and bearing the nickname "VW Käfer" or the "VW Beetle", the Volkswagen became as popular the world over as hardly any other car before or after.

The VW Beetle also sets the record in terms of its production life and volume, production of the last VW Beetle still coming off the line in Mexico continuing until July 2003. And accounting for 21.5 million units built, the Beetle is by far one of the highest-production vehicles of all times.

The Porsche Museum is dedicating a Special Exhibition to the 75th anniversary of the order to build the Volkswagen, held from 22 June -
31 July 2009. Apart from detailed information and original pictures from the Historical Archives of Porsche AG, the Exhibition also presents a rare pre-war prototype of the Volkswagen. This very special VW38 from the Volkswagen Foundation Collection was used personally by Professor Porsche, also on many business trips. Another rare car is the prototype of a VW Beetle powered by a diesel engine and built by Porsche in the early 1950s.

Mercedes Benz WorldImage by wetwebwork via Flickr

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has praised the new driving academy from Mercedes-Benz, which looks to improve the skills of young drivers.

Children from as young as 12 are able to take part in one of three modules to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to ensure incidents on the road are kept to a minimum.

As well as mastering how to maintain control of a car and traffic situations, children will take part in role-playing exercises to gain a greater understanding, while testing their reactions and how little they panic in practical experiences.

Parents are also given the chance to gain practical advice on how to become the best possible in-car advisors when they are out with their children outside of the handling circuits at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge, Surrey.

Area manager for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service Leslie Dodd said: "Last year 14 young people died on our roads and ten of their passengers were killed.

"Any scheme which equips drivers with the skills and knowledge to stay safe on our roads deserves our support."

A similar academy has been set up in Sweden and has had a positive impact on young drivers, with accident rates falling by around 40 per cent.

Opel Insignia Park Assistant Takes the Guessing Out of Parking

Opel announces a new park assistance feature on the Insignia that puts an end to second-guessing on those coveted parking spaces. It is a perfect tool for car drivers who don’t have the courage to fill in a narrow spot. Or when it isn’t clear at first glance whether a car will fit or how to attempt a tough parallel park in the midst of hectic traffic.

The Park Assistant makes parking a breeze: It finds spots into which the Insignia can nudge and provides understandable instructions via a signal on the dashboard. The feature costs 645 euros.

The special advantage of the system is that it recognizes spaces which are only one meter longer than the vehicle as it passes by. Other comparable fully automatic systems need to find spots that are significantly longer than one meter before they set to work.

The Park Assistant can be activated as soon as drivers traveling up to 30 kilometers per hour edge 1.8 meters away from a row of cars. As soon as a sensor located on the side of the vehicle recognizes a space, it signals the driver on the central display and begins giving steering instructions. Through ten sensors on the front and back bumpers, the Insignia can predict all possible obstacles and send out warning signals in advance.

The Park Assistant rounds out a wide array of innovative technological features that support Insignia drivers. The list also includes the Opel Eye Front Camera which recognizes traffic signs and inadvertent lane changes as well as the Adaptive Forward Lighting+ with nine different light functions.

NEW GOLF PLUS BIFUEL NOW AVAILABLE FOR ORDER

The Golf Plus now also runs on LPG. Thanks to the use of this alternative fuel, a reduction of more than 10% in CO2 emissions and fuel savings of €6.10 per 100 kilometres* in LPG mode could also be achieved, due in part to the reduced German fuel tax in place until 2018. All in all, a solid argument.

With its bi-fuel drive system – which can run on petrol at the flick of a switch – the new Golf Plus lowers consumption and emissions: the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine with 72 kW / 98 PS needs an average of 9.8 litres of LPG per 100 kilometres (159 g/km CO2). When burning petrol, the Golf Plus BiFuel is even more economical (7.5 litres of Super, 179 g/km CO2) over the same distance.

This gives the LPG-powered Golf Plus an environmental edge, namely CO2 emissions more than 10% lower than those of comparable petrol-engined vehicles. The 55-litre petrol tank and the LPG tank, which has a usable volume of 43 litres and is built into the spare wheel well to save space, provide an extended range of more than 1,100 kilometres. The LPG tank alone has a range of about 440 kilometres. LPG filling station coverage is comprehensive in Europe – in Germany alone there are more than 4,700 stations.

The factory-installed solution for the new Golf Plus BiFuel is considerably more advantageous than an LPG conversion: to name just a couple of benefits, the vehicle has been subjected to extensive endurance testing and undergone crash testing with the LPG tank, making it extremely safe. Customers receive a full warranty for the entire vehicle, LPG components included. The new Golf Plus BiFuel is now available for order in the Trendline and Comfortline versions at an entry-level price of €22,460.

Audi on the podium again at Le Mans

- Third place for R15 TDI on Le Mans début
- Unexpected difficulties rob Audi of chance of victory
- Clear commitment to 24 Hours of Le Mans

Eleven starts, eleven times in succession on the winner’s podium: Audi continued its impressive series of podium results in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After taking three consecutive victories Audi Sport Team Joest had to settle for third position on this occasion in probably the world’s toughest endurance race.

"If you win the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times in succession and eight times overall this doesn’t happen by chance,” declared Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, after the eventful race. "We know how difficult it is to win Le Mans. Also Peugeot, who we congratulate on this well deserved victory, needed three attempts. I trust our technicians implicitly as well as the entire team and I am convinced that we will strike back next year. We are fully committed to this race. Audi will leave no stone unturned in its quest to reclaim the Le Mans winner’s trophy in 2010.”

The Le Mans début of the technically innovative Audi R15 TDI demonstrated that it has become even more difficult to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans first time out with a completely new sports prototype. After cancellation of the traditional test day, and Wednesday’s wet and rainy free practice session the subsequent four-hour qualifying session on Thursday and the 45-minute warm-up on Saturday morning was insufficient time to set-up the new Audi R15 TDI perfectly for the 13.629 kilometer track around which it is impossible to test.

With considerably higher temperatures on race day than on Thursday evening, and the correspondingly different grip levels caused by this, every Audi driver complained that the cars understeered excessively during the opening stages of the race. This was corrected on Saturday evening by fitting another front bodywork section with a different aerodynamic configuration. "Our car was very good after the changes,” said Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen.

However, another phenomenon occurred early on which had never appeared during the test race at Sebring (USA) in March or throughout the subsequent test program: The intercoolers mounted in the sidepods of the three Audi R15 TDI became so dirty that they had to be cleaned repeatedly. Due to the increasing intercooler temperature the engine power had to be reduced occasionally.

Furthermore, two of the three Audi R15 TDI were torn out of the fight for overall victory in the opening hours. The three Germans Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockenfeller and Marco Werner were forced to retire after six-and-a-half hours due to an accident. Lucas Luhr lost control of his Audi R15 TDI over a bump in the extremely fast "Porsche Curves” and slammed backwards into the barriers. The stewards prohibited the heavily damaged R15 TDI from continuing due to safety reasons.

Timo Bernhard (Germany) and the two Frenchmen Romain Dumas and Alexandre Prémat tumbled down the running order and were left in a hopeless position because the high-pressure injection pump, which normally runs absolutely reliably and which is barely accessible, had to be changed on the V10 TDI engine in their R15 TDI.

As a result, Audi Sport Team Joest were left with the single Audi R15 TDI of Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish, who put the two leading Peugeots under constant pressure up until Sunday afternoon by setting fast lap times, before changing the right-rear suspension cost them four laps. At the end last year’s winners restricted themselves to defending their third position from the fourth placed Aston Martin.

"There is absolutely no doubt that race did not run as we had imagined,” pronounced Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "We have once again seen why the 24 Hours of Le Mans is justifiably regarded as the world’s toughest car race and why absolutely everything must be correct if you want to win. This was definitely not the case with us this time. We had unexpected problems with our new R15 TDI, which we will now analyze in peace and must solve. However, especially in the second half of the race we saw just how much potential the car has. We will build on this before making a new attempt next year.”

Mercedes-AMG GmbH Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach ...Image via Wikipedia

Mercedes Benz Car sales continue to remain strong in various markets worldwide despite the continuing global climate and negativity in the motoring industry, it has been revealed.

During May, some 97,300 vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, smart, AMG and Maybach were delivered worldwide, taking the figure for the year-to-date to 433,100.

However, last month, sales rose by 67.5 per cent compared to last May in China, while a 7.8 per cent increase was noted in the Asia/Pacific region and a 12.2 per cent rise was registered in Germany.

In Germany, strong sales were registered in both Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class models, but it was the launch of the E-Class that significantly aided the results.

Dr Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "The new E-Class has met with an outstanding customer response.

"We expect sales to receive a further boost in the coming months from the introduction of the new E-Class to other important markets such as China and the US, as well as from the launch of the new E-Class Coupe and the face lifted S-Class."

Among the positives of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, which is to be launched at Mercedes-Benz retailers in the UK on June 12th, are that it features standard equipment including a heated windscreen wash system, chrome window highlights and full LED rear taillights.

Audi R15 TDI in the limelight at Le Mans

- Technical scrutineering in Le Mans town center
- New diesel racing sports car besieged by fans
- Thousands of spectators despite pouring rain

Audi Sport has spooled off approximately 20,000 test kilometers with the Audi R15 TDI since its roll out last December. Now things get serious: The first 24 Hours of Le Mans race for the technically innovative racing sports car from AUDI AG is on the agenda this coming weekend.

Audi Sport Team Joest cleared the first compulsory hurdle in France without encountering any complications: On Monday, all three Audi R15 TDI concluded technical scrutineering in the Le Mans town center without problems, which was followed, despite the pouring rain, by thousands of fans but also by numerous representatives from the competition.

"It’s fantastic that in spite of the terrible weather so many spectators attended the technical scrutineering, which traditionally opens the Le Mans week," explained Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "That our competitors were also interested in the R15 TDI is clear – after all they haven’t seen the car since Sebring."

After its victorious début in March the diesel racing sportscar has been purposely optimized for the peculiarities of the extremely fast race track at Le Mans. "We had planned two aerodynamic configurations for the R15 TDI from the very beginning," says Dr Ullrich. "A version for Sebring with maximum downforce, and one for Le Mans with greater emphasis on the aerodynamic efficiency. The basic concept is, however, exactly the same. The modifications which we undertook for Le Mans were already planned before Sebring."

It was not only the three Audi R15 TDI which took the limelight on Monday, but also the nine Audi drivers who signed innumerable autographs despite the bad weather. Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas came directly to Le Mans from America after completing a race for Porsche at Watkins Glen, Dindo Capello from a race with the Audi R8 LMS at Magione, Italy.

Tom Kristensen surprised the spectators with his new helmet design which portrays the Audi R15 TDI. The Le Mans record winner was surrounded, as usual, by fans, journalists, photographers and television camera teams. "We had technical scrutineering a day earlier than in the previous years," said the Dane. "That so many spectators already turned up on Monday, in spite of such bad weather, shows just how important the race at Le Mans is. That our three cars once more passed effortlessly through scrutineering proves that our mechanics and engineers have done a perfect job. This gives us drivers a confident feeling. We’ll use the extra day to inspect the track."

Rainy weather is forecast up to and including Wednesday. Sunshine and temperatures of up to 26 degrees Celsius in the shade are expected in time for the weekend.

BMW Group’s EfficientDynamics programme gives customers outstanding fuel economy and low emissions without giving up driving enjoyment. This was recognised again this year at the What Car? Green Car Awards 2009. The MINI Cooper S won the Green Sports Car category for the second year in a row and the BMW 318d took the honours in the Executive Car category.

The MINI Cooper S has a punchy, turbocharged engine which powers it to 62 mph in just 7.1 seconds, but returns a combined fuel consumption figure of 45.6 mpg and CO2 emissions are just 149 g/km. Steve Fowler, Editor-in-Chief at What Car?, said: “The MINI Cooper S is a home-grown hot hatch that’s big on performance and style, yet treads far lighter than rivals because of its smaller carbon footprint.”

The BMW 318d Saloon is BMW’s most fuel efficient and least polluting 3 Series ever. A 318d Saloon records a combined consumption figure of 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 123g/km, while at the same time is capable of a zero to 62mph time of 9.3 seconds. It was the blend of these impressive performance figures that assured the parsimonious 3 Series model with top green honours.

BMW first offered EfficientDynamics as standard in 2007. A raft of models received Auto Start / Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, Active Aerodynamics, low rolling resistance tyres, Electric Power Steering, on-demand ancillary systems and optimum gearshift indicator features.

These technologies built on the existing lightweight engineering principles and direct injection engine technology introduced over the previous years. Across virtually the entire MINI range, many of the same technologies are present under the MINIMALISM title and ensure the premium small car offers an unbeatable mix of fun and frugality.

Opel Insignia ecoFLEX: Green and Strong

RUESSELSHEIM, GERMANY - FEBRUARY 26: Protesto...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

  • Clean: only 136 g/km CO2 and 5.2 l/100 km
  • Dynamic: 160 hp and up to 380 Nm of torque
  • Sleek: among the best with a CD of 0.26

Rüsselsheim. The new Opel Insignia ecoFLEX combines the best of both worlds: It offers low emissions and fuel consumption without compromising on performance or driving dynamic. While it only consumes 5.2 liter of diesel per 100 km – equivalent to 136 g/km of CO2 emissions – it delivers 118 kW/160 hp and a up to 380 Nm of torque. That is thanks to a powerful, new generation turbo diesel 2-liter common rail engine refined specifically for this model.

Like the engines across the entire Insignia range, the one on the ecoFLEX meets tough Euro 5 standards. Due to an exceptionally low level of CO2 emissions in its category, well below 140g/km, it can benefit from substantial tax advantages in several European countries. Moreover, attractive pricing and outstanding performance make the Insignia ecoFLEX a rarity, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 221 km/h. Prices start at 27,500 euros in Germany.

The Insignia ecoFLEX notchback and hatchback sedans will be available at Opel dealerships early summer 2009. A Sports Tourer variant will debut this fall.

“When defining the Insignia ecoFLEX, we decided to offer more than just a green car: It needed to deliver a high level of performance and as many innovative technologies as the rest of the Insignia range. At this price, it simply has no true competitor,” says Hans Demant, Managing Director Adam Opel GmbH.

CleanTech technology optimizes efficiency

The heart of the ecoFLEX model is the 118 kW/160 hp version of the new generation 4-cylinder 2.0 CDTI launched on the Insignia last winter. It comes exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox, whose final gear ratio has been lengthened to reduce engine speed and fuel consumption. In addition, a gear shift indicator signals to the driver when the powertrain management system considers shifting up a gear would be optimal to saving fuel.

Moreover, shorter gear ratios have been selected for the first and second gears to avoid any deterioration of the Insignia ecoFLEX acceleration capabilities: It reaches 100km/h from a standstill in only 9.5 seconds – a performance that is identical to the standard 2.0 CDTI 160 hp version.

A specific, innovative technology premieres in the engine of the Insignia ecoFLEX: the CleanTech Combustion Process. Developed by GM engineers, it ensures the lowest possible fuel consumption and level of emissions via an electronic close-loop system. The key enablers of that fuel economy technology are the new piezo-resistive sensors which measure the pressure in each of the four combustion chambers.

CD value places ecoFLEX among the top streamlined sedans in the world

The Insignia ecoFLEX reaches a remarkable CD value of 0.26, placing it among the top streamlined sedans in the world – in the same company of more expensive cars from premium brands.

Compared to a standard 2.0 CDTI Insignia, the air drag value of the ecoFLEX model has been reduced by no less than 20 points. Five major modifications contribute to this result: Tank covers were added in front of the rear axle; the upper cooling grille was closed; the center cut-out of the front spoiler was closed; the standing height was lowered and the lower side of the radiator was sealed.

In addition, the Insignia ecoFLEX is equipped with specifically designed, low resistance 225/55 R 17 tires developed by Michelin.

EcoFLEX available with all innovative technologies from the Insignia

The ecoFLEX model benefits from the innovative technologies which have made the Insignia the 2009 Car of the Year. The Insignia’s newly developed mechatronic chassis can be enhanced with the innovative FlexRide system which raises stability and provides real time, electronically controlled damping. FlexRide gives the driver the choice between three driving modes: In addition to the standard comfort setting, one can opt for a softer Tour mode, or experience the performance of the Insignia ecoFLEX in a more active way by selecting the Sport mode which impacts both the ride, the steering and gas pedal response.

Another innovative feature beneficial to the safety and the driving precision is the new-generation AFL+ system featuring bi-xenon headlamps that adjust to prevailing traffic conditions with nine different lighting functions. Also available is the new Opel Eye front camera system which recognizes traffic signs and warns drivers when they unintentionally veer out of their lane. Last but not least: For the health of Insignia ecoFLEX customers who are frequent drivers, Opel also offers favorably priced, particularly back-friendly, orthopedically-certified ergonomic sport seats.

Opel offers a complete range of ecoFLEX models

The new Opel Insignia ecoFLEX joins a full range of Opel cars designed for environmentally friendly mobility. In each model family, the ecoFLEX version gives the lowest fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. EcoFLEX models are not only powered with diesel, but also offer gasoline and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) variants.

“For years, we have been committed to providing accessible technical innovation and protecting our environment at all levels,” recalls Alain Visser, Vice President Opel. “We believe this is our social responsibility, particularly as it now becomes a stronger wish from our customers. Both are of equal importance to us.”

Maximum efficiency in the production of the Panamera

Porsche SEImage via Wikipedia

In April 2009 series production of Porsche's fourth model line, the Panamera, started in the Leipzig plant of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. In the world's most modern automotive factory to date the manufacturer of premium sports vehicles is assembling the four-door Gran Turismo together with the Cayenne sports utility vehicle on one line using the latest production methods. At the same time Porsche has managed to almost entirely do away with expensive storage areas by installing a logistics concept that is an innovation in the industry. 'I know of no other factory anywhere in the world in which the principles of lean production have been as consistently implemented as here in Leipzig,' said Michael Macht, Board member responsible for production and logistics at Porsche, speaking today to journalists at the Leipzig plant.

To make production as efficient as possible, substantial building work was necessary at the factory premises in Leipzig, which cover 300 hectares. Porsche invested around EUR 150 million in a new 25,000 m² assembly hall, a logistics center, a pilot and analysis center, and a training facility. 'Leipzig and the Cayenne sport utility vehicle that are produced there are a total success story. We have a superb team at our plant, one that is extremely motivated and delivers excellent quality. The prerequisites for producing the Panamera in Leizpig could therefore not be better,' said Siegfried Bülow, Chairman of the Board at Porsche Leipzig GmbH.

A new logistics concept has now been developed for the Panamera production - one which ensures incisive improvements. An exact schedule and plan of procedures in which all suppliers are incorporated makes it possible to deliver parts at high frequency and just one hour before they are further processed on the production line. This means that expensive storage areas are virtually unnecessary - this is unique in this form in the international automotive industry. As the suppliers are mostly companies from Germany the German share of the value creation of the Panamera is a good 70 per cent. Macht: 'Entirely in the spirit of the company, the Panamera thus also stands for the seal of quality "Made in Germany".'

For Michael Macht, the production of the two vehicle types Cayenne and Panamera on one production line is also a 'logistical master stroke'. Almost all the engines for both models are brought to Leipzig by truck from the Porsche plant in Zuffenhausen. The partially equipped Cayenne bodies come by rail from Bratislava, the Panamera bodyshells by rail from the Volkswagen plant in Hanover. In Leipzig the interior of the Panamera is first assembled on a singular line. Once both bodies have reached the same status in the manufacturing process they run on one line until completion. And this despite countless individualization options for both models.

During the construction of the plant in Leipzig, which was put into operation in August 2002, Porsche invested EUR 127 million and thus consistently implemented the guidelines of a lean factory. Experience won in Zuffenhausen was of particular help here. To save the company Porsche had restructured the production in its main plant along Japanese production lines as early as the beginning of the 1990s and thus put itself back on the road to success. To meet the high requirements and expectations of its customers Porsche continues to put its faith primarily in specialist personnel from the region around Leipzig. Porsche Leipzig GmbH currently has some 600 staff. Between 2003 and 2006, a limited edition of 1,270 units of the super sports car Carrera GT was also produced by hand in the Leipzig plant. And at the beginning of this year, the 250,000th SUV sports vehicle rolled off the production line. With the V6 Diesel the Cayenne model is now offered in seven versions. The company excels here with a highly modern customer center, a drive-in and testing section, and a six-kilometer-long offroad track. In the company's own biotope, 70 aurochs and a herd of wild horses enjoy a peaceful existence as 'caretakers of the landscape.'

Porsche is also making its mark in the city of Leipzig. It attracted particular attention five years ago with its assistance for the Nikolai Church. With a donation of EUR 1.8 million the company made it possible to fully restore the famous Ladegast organ. Twenty years after the fall of the Wall and ten years after the decision was taken to establish the plant in Leipzig as a production center for the Cayenne, Porsche and the city are aiming to write yet another chapter in the success story with the Panamera. Michael Macht: 'We have never regretted deciding upon Leipzig. The success of the Cayenne proves us right. That is why there was no question of us not producing the Panamera in Leipzig too.'

With the Panamera Porsche has its eyes firmly set on new groups of buyers from the luxury class. The vehicle is characterized by a high degree of comfort, exceptional space and extremely sporty driving characteristics with low consumption. The Panamera is defining a whole new concept in the luxury class. For its market introduction on September 12 in Germany, the Gran Turismo will initially be launched in 3 variations that will be equipped with a 400-hp V8 induction engine or with a V8 biturbo engine with 500 hp. Porsche is planning to sell an average of around 20,000 units of the Panamera over the entire lifecycle.

BMW M3 buttImage by Delox - Martin Deák via Flickr

The BMW M3, a car which has long been an automotive benchmark, is now available as a special Edition model. This ultimate M3 comes with a 10mm lower ride height for enhanced dynamic capability while the interior and exterior offer unique visual enhancements to differentiate them from the standard M3 Coupé.

Available to UK customers in three striking colour combinations of Alpine White, BMW Individual Dakar Yellow and BMW Individual Monte Carlo Blue, the new model features a dark chrome shadow-coloured kidney grille, side vents, bonnet vents and twin exhaust tailpipe. Black wing mirrors, with connecting supports in the car’s body colour, help distinguish the new model from other BMW M3 variants.

In profile, the new M3 Coupé Editions feature 19-inch M Double-spoke light-alloy wheels in silver alloy as standard and with black gloss finish as an option. High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim is also standard.

The new M3 Coupé Edition retains the existing carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic roof panel with exposed weave as the standard M3. The carbon-fibre roof panel saves 5kgs over a conventional roof panel and lowers the centre of gravity to contribute to the M3’s benchmark driving dynamics.

Inside, the latest BMW M3 has a number of signature touches to set it apart from the existing model. All three versions feature exterior body-coloured stripes on the standard Novillo leather interior, on the front and rear seat backrests and the extension of the seat squab. The front seats also come with exterior colour contrast stitching whilst Black Carbon-structure leather interior trim is a standard offering. Dakar Yellow and Monte Carlo Blue owners will get a continuation of this threadwork on the armrest and passenger door handle.

The Alpine White M3 will get an interior with contrast stitching on the carbon structure leather trim and contrast-coloured door armrest pads, centre console and centre armrest pad. A checkered flag motif decorates the door sill plates to underscore the racing pedigree of the M3, which has won more Touring Car titles than any other car as well as numerous Endurance races.

BMW M3 engines took top category honours on a record six successive occasions in the Engine of the Year awards. It develops 420hp at 8,300rpm and 400Nm of torque at 3,900rpm from its 3,999cc V8-power unit, and red-lines at 8,400rpm. To highlight the flexibility of the engine, 85 per cent of torque is available over 6,500rpm. Power is transferred to the road by BMW M’s six-speed manual gearbox and variable M differential which conveys up to 100 per cent of available power to the wheel with most grip. Customers can upgrade to the paddle-shift (M Double Clutch Transmission) transmission with its enhanced fuel economy, CO2 emissions performance and faster acceleration.

Like its predecessor, the V8-powered BMW M3 easily breaks through the magical 100hp per litre barrier, offering 105hp per litre. This engine powers the car from zero to 62mph in 4.8 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. However, these supercar levels of performance do not compromise economy with the car still delivering 22.8mpg on the combined cycle.

This relative frugal performance is delivered, in part, thanks to BMW’s EfficientDynamics programme. Far from only influencing the smaller-engined cars in the range, EfficientDynamics offers benefits to one of the most sporting cars offered by BMW, courtesy of Brake Energy Regeneration. This technology uses an Intelligent Alternator Control and Absorbent Glass Mat battery to recognise when the engine is on over-run and activates the alternator to charge the battery with what would previously have been wasted energy.

The M3 Coupé Edition features MDrive manager that brings together numerous personalised functions of the car. The settings for the optional Electronic Damper Control (Normal, Comfort and Sport), three DSC+ traction control settings and three specific engine control maps, plus the response rate of the Servotronic power steering can be controlled with one button on the steering wheel. Once the desired settings are created in the iDrive menu, part of the standard Professional Multimedia navigation system, one push of the MDrive button transforms the M3 from a car to drive to the shops to a track day special.

Mercedes Benz S-Class Mild Seven D-SpecImage by exo_duz via Flickr

Many choices will be facing UK motorists looking to buy the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, it has been revealed.

According to Fleet News, buyers will have the choice from four conventional engines – three petrol and a diesel – and between either standard or long wheelbase models.

The vehicle reviewed by the publication was the Mercedes-Benz S350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, offering improvements on the current S320 CDI in terms of CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency.

Among the reasons for these developments are the addition of low rolling resistance tyres and sealed joints around the headlamps that help to reduce drag.

The new figures mean motorists can expect to drive for 37.2 miles on a gallon of fuel, while generating 199g/km of carbon dioxide.

Overall, the verdict of the publication is that the vehicle is a "bit dressier" when compared to past offerings, although this is not at the expense of substance, style and quality.

The Distronic Plus cruise control system is one of the optional extras that can be purchased by motorists, which helps to benefit a driver in terms of comfort through measuring the distance of cars and other objects that are nearby.
