Mercedes-Benz acquires Brawn GP team

German car giant Mercedes-Benz has taken over Brawn GP, it was announced on Monday. Mercedes engines powered Brawn to victory in both the 2009 drivers’ and constructors’ championships. The team is expected to be rebranded Mercedes GP for next season, with Ross Brawn remaining as team principal.

Mercedes will also continue to supply long-term partners McLaren with engines until at least 2015, but the company’s 40 percent shareholding in the team will be reacquired by McLaren over the next two years.

Along with its investors Aabar, Mercedes’ parent company Daimler AG will take over a 75.1 percent stake of Brawn GP, the team formed by Ross Brawn and his colleagues less than a year ago after previous owners Honda announced their withdrawal from Formula One racing.

"Brawn GP has been through an incredible journey over the last 12 months,” said Brawn. “From fighting for our survival to forging a strong relationship with Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, winning both the constructors' and drivers' world championships, and now accepting Daimler and Aabar's offer to buy our team, which will secure its future.

“The senior management group will remain in place to lead our team and on behalf of everyone at Brawn GP, we are honoured to be representing such a prestigious brand as Mercedes-Benz in Formula One next year and will be working together to do our best to reward their faith in our team."

According to Mercedes, the decision to step up their level of Formula One involvement was prompted by recent agreements on ways of cutting expenditure in the sport and by the higher levels of income afforded to teams following the signing of the new Concorde Agreement earlier this year.

“Mercedes-Benz is the most valued and best-known premium automotive brand in the world. This brand looks for competition of the utmost quality in all relevant fields in order to continually improve its performance in the face of such new challenges,” explained Dr Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

“Due to the new Formula One environment, we will face the competition in future on the most important motor sports stage with our own Silver Arrow works team. Our new Silver Arrow Formula One team is a great sporting and technical challenge and we will tackle this with sporting spirit and full of enthusiasm.”

Brawn GP’s UK factory in Brackley is less than 30 miles from Mercedes’ Formula One engine plant at Brixworth, which should make for a highly-efficient operation to be coordinated by the familiar figure of Norbert Haug, Vice-President of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport.

“It is our target to develop a model for our Formula One activities which will initially be run with significantly reduced budgets by Mercedes-Benz and which, in the foreseeable future, will be self-financing,” commented Haug.

“Furthermore, we naturally want to inspire our faithful spectators and TV viewers worldwide and maximize media coverage for our brand. With Formula One, Mercedes-Benz can continue to clearly demonstrate its willingness to compete and win on the most important motor sports competition stage in the world.”

Mercedes have yet to comment on the driver line-up for their ‘new’ team. Rubens Barrichello has already left Brawn for Williams, while speculation continues that world champion Jenson Button could switch to McLaren to partner Lewis Hamilton.

Porsche Boxster Spyder

Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is introducing a new top version of the Porsche Boxster, a light mid-engined roadster making its world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in December.

Weighing just 1,275 kg or 2,811 lb, the Boxster Spyder is the lightest model throughout the entire range of Porsche cars. Clearly recognisable right from the start, this new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the Porsche sports car - light, powerful, consistently open, and very efficient.

This is precisely the formula already applied in creating Porsche's most successful road-going sports and racing cars, ranging from the legendary 550 Spyder all the way to the RS Spyder so successful in motorsport today.

The Boxster Spyder now continues this clear-cut philosophy with full homologation for the road, thus reflecting a common wish expressed by Porsche customers. The new model is entering the market in February 2010 as the third version in the Boxster range, joining the Boxster and Boxster S.

The new member of the Boxster family stands out clearly at very first sight from the other versions of Porsche's mid-engined roadster. Quite simply because the Boxster Spyder has been developed first and foremost for driving in the open air, the low-slung, light soft top extending far to the rear serving exclusively to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. When closed, the soft top, together with the extra-low side windows and the two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, boasts a stretched and sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

Significantly less weight than the Boxster S, a lower centre of gravity and an all-new sports suspension give the Boxster Spyder the right kind of driving dynamics clearly reflecting the unique look of the car.

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-litre six-cylinder with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 bhp, 10 bhp more than in the Boxster S.

Equipped with PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Again with optional PDK, fuel consumption is a mere 9.3 litres on 100 kilometres (equal to 30.4 mpg imp) in the NEDC New European Driving Cycle. Top speed, in turn, is 267 km/h or 166 mph - with the roof open.

In terms of its fundamental concept, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder built back in 1953, both models sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept, low weight, back-to-the-roots lifestyle, and supreme agility com-bined with equally outstanding driving pleasure.

The 550 Spyder was the first sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen developed specifically for racing but also homologated for the road. In the years following its production, this unique Spyder weighing only 550 kg or 1,213 lb, scored numerous victories on race circuits and in the road races so popular at the time.

The 550 Spyder was followed by other extremely successful Porsche Spyders such as the 718 RS 60 in 1960.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche dedicated a limited edition of special Boxsters bearing the additional name Spyder to these legendary racing cars. By contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, specially developed and upgraded production model with far-reaching modifications versus the Boxster and Boxster S.

Market introduction of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder will start worldwide in February 2010. The base price in the Euro countries is 53,100 Euro. Including 19 per cent VAT and national specifications, the market price of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder is 63,404 Euro.

Audi upgrades annual sales target to 925,000 cars

Audi corporate logoImage via Wikipedia

AUDI AG sold around 82,750 cars in October, 0.4 percent more than in the prior-year month (2008: 82,436). From January through October, Audi sold some 787,900 cars worldwide (2008: 844,724). The difference compared with the record-breaking year 2008 was consequently reduced to -6.7 percent, significantly better than forecast at the start of the year. In China, Audi had already matched the total for the whole of 2008 by the last week of October.

“Our sales figures worldwide have developed much better than expected,” remarked Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “The Audi Q5 is emerging as one of our most successful models. And in particular the A5 and A6 model lines are selling well. We are therefore upgrading our worldwide sales target to 925,000 cars.”

In January, Audi had been the only premium carmaker to issue a specific sales target for 2009; the company’s aim at that point was to sell around 900,000 vehicles, some ten percent down on 2008. Audi’s positive sales trend also owes to an outstanding performance in its biggest international market, China.

In 2008 as a whole, Audi sold 119,598 premium automobiles to customers in China (incl. Hong Kong). In 2009, this statistic was already exceeded in the last week of October. From January through October the Audi brand sold 123,369 cars in China, 22.7 percent more than in the prior-year period (2008: 100,564). In October alone, sales were 50.7 percent up on that of October 2008 with 14,510 units (2008: 9,630).

In Western Europe Audi confirmed its leading position in the premium segment over the first ten month. In markets such as Italy, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands, the brand was able to increase its market share. All in all, AUDI AG sold around 496,750 premium cars in the region over this period (-11.6 percent; 2008: 561,975); specifically for October, the sales total of around 50,750 cars was 8.0 percent down on the 2008 figure (2008: 55,140). In Germany, the sales figures for October fell 7.5 percent short of the previous year's total at 22,021 cars (2008: 23,802); over the first ten months, this consequently reduced the shortfall on the record year to -9.9 percent (2008: 210,266).

In the United States, Audi of America sold 7,358 cars in October, 1.1 percent fewer than in the prior-year month (2008: 7,443). Over the first ten months, the sales total was thus 8.7 percent down on the previous year at 66,876 cars (2008: 73,260) – again better than forecast at the start of the year. In a much weaker overall market, the Audi brand consequently further strengthened its position and achieved an 8.3 percent share of the premium market (2008: 6.9 percent).

Clarkson ‘overawed’ by Mercedes-Benz CLK Black

The huge range of abilities that can be boasted by the Mercedes-Benz CLK Black has been noticed by Jeremy Clarkson, who said he is "overawed" by the car’s performance.

In his Sunday Times column, Clarkson said the 6.2-litre CLK Black’s 507 horsepower and impressive wheel arch extensions would usually be enough to satisfy him, although the vehicle is able to offer so much more.

He compared the thrill of driving one to controlling "something that was actually designed to kill you", signing off his initial review of the CLK Black by concluding that no-one’s life was complete without one.

One of the car’s selling points is its exceptional handling, with Clarkson referring to the steering as "sublime".

Indeed, he was so impressed during a test drive that he is now the proud owner of his own Mercedes CLK Black limited edition, regularly driving it to and from his home in Chipping Norton.

In its review of the CLK Black, Top Gear referred to the roadster as a "revelation", describing the vehicle’s connection with the tarmac as "satisfyingly mechanical".

One year after the Insignia won Car of the Year 2009, Opel is honored to have the new Astra named as a finalist for Europe’s top automotive award.

“This is like being nominated for the Oscars. We are really proud to be nominated two years in a row,” says Alain Visser, Vice President Sales, Marketing & Aftersales for Opel/Vauxhall. “This proves that Opel has a great line up of cars that will carry us confidently into the future.”

Seven COTY finalists were chosen from a field of 33 cars new to the market. A jury of 59 top automotive journalists from 23 European countries will announce this year’s winner November 30. The Car of the Year award is special because it crowns a single winner.

The jurors vote on such criteria as design, comfort, safety, economy, handling, performance, functionality, environmental requirements, driver satisfaction, and price. Technical innovation and value for money are particularly important factors for COTY and they are an Opel strong point. Opel has grabbed the title three times since the 1964, when the polling began. The second generation Kadett won in 1985; the Omega in 1987 and the Insignia in 2009.

The New Opel Astra, which premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show, follows in the Insignia’s footsteps by hallmarking Opel’s philosophy of combining German precision with sassy design. For the first time, innovative technologies like adaptive lighting and the Opel Eye camera system are accessible to the most popular segment in the automotive market.

Since the first order books opened at the end of September, some 35,000 orders have been received for the Astra. Deliveries start early December.

Hammond: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG “no ordinary Merc”

Picture of w:Richard Hammond, on the set of w:...Image via Wikipedia

The upcoming Mercedes-Benz Gullwing could be a bit of a steal on the pricing front because it is "no ordinary Merc", according to Richard Hammond.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror, the car enthusiast and Top Gear presenter remarks that the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is likely to be available for approximately £150,000 when it goes on sale in the UK next year.

This is about a third cheaper than a collector could pick up an old Gullwing from the 1950s for and it also "packs a rather fiercer punch" on the road.

Despite the SLS AMG being fitted with a 6.2-litre V8 engine that can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour, Mr Hammond argues that being watched getting out of the vehicle will offer the biggest thrill.

He said: "The pleasure in owning a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG won’t be driving around at ridiculous speeds. It’ll be turning up outside a posh restaurant in Monaco and lifting the Gullwing door."

Ease of entry and exit were at the forefront of designers’ minds with the doors, as they are wide-opening, while two gas-dampers next to the hinges ensures little effort is required to open or close them.

Meanwhile, the doors can even be opened in a standard-sized garage and require less room than doors associated with typical coupe models.

Audi R8 LMS surpasses all expectations

Audi R8Image via Wikipedia

At the end of the 2009 motorsport season AUDI AG cannot only be pleased with the successful title defense in the DTM. The Audi R8 LMS made a convincing showing in its first racing season as well: The GT3 race sports car developed for customer sport clinched 23 victories and three champion’s titles.

"Actually, 2009 was planned to be a year of learning for the Audi R8 LMS but our expectations were surpassed by far," said Michael Dick, who as Executive Board Member for Technical Development is also responsible for the motorsport commitment of AUDI AG. "After only one year, the R8 is already a GT3 car to be beaten."

The 525-hp race sports car that was developed by Audi Sport in close cooperation with quattro GmbH ran at a total of 76 races in various European sports car series in its first season. Highlights were the FIA GT3 European Championship win by Team Phoenix Racing with the two young Germans Christopher Haase and Christopher Mies, the triumph of Team ABT Sportsline with Christian Abt in the ADAC-GT Masters in Germany and class victories at the two 24-hour races on the Nürburgring and at Spa-Francorchamps. In addition, Phoenix Racing clinched titles in Belgium.

"The Audi R8 LMS won three of the most important GT3 racing series right away and also proved its endurance capability on the Nürburgring and at Spa," assesses Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "The decision to place the R8 LMS in its first season into the hands of teams with which Audi Sport has been working together for a long time was absolutely right. They have a major part in the success of the Audi R8 LMS."

It is a remarkable fact that the R8 LMS celebrated at least one victory wherever it competed in 2009: in the ADAC GT Masters as well as in the FIA GT3 European Championship, the national GT3 championships in Belgium, Italy and France, in the BFGoodrich Endurance Championship on the legendary Nürburgring-Nordschleife, at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring and at Spa-Francorchamps and, finally, on the first November weekend also at a wild card run in the "International Open GT" racing series in Spain.

The experience gained at the 76 racing commitments in collaboration with Teams ABT Sportsline, Argo-Racing, Audi Sport Italia, Oreca, Phoenix Racing and Team Rosberg is now being fed into the final version of the Audi R8 LMS to be delivered at the end of March 2010 to customer teams at a price of 298,000 euros (plus VAT).

"The interest by customers all over the world is huge," says Oliver Straube, who is responsible for marketing the Audi R8 LMS at Audi Sport. "We could clearly sell more cars in 2010 than we originally planned but we will limit ourselves to a maximum of 15 vehicles in order to be able to offer our customers the type of service they can expect Audi Sport to deliver."

Audi achieves hat-trick in the DTM

Timo Scheider driving for Audi in the 2006 Deu...Image via Wikipedia

Befitting its 100th anniversary, Audi has written another chapter of motorsport history. The brand is the first ever automobile manufacturer to achieve a title hat-trick in the prestigious international touring car racing series: After 2007 and 2008, Audi has clinched the coveted trophy for the third consecutive time.

In the thrilling finale at the Hockenheimring in front of a magnificent turnout of 155,000 spectators Audi driver Timo Scheider stayed on the heels of his only remaining rival for the title, Gary Paffett, during the entire 39 laps and successfully defended his title from last year by finishing in second place.

"Every Audi employee can be proud of the performance which the DTM squad delivered this year – or better said, has been delivering for three consecutive years," commented Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Executive Board of AUDI AG. "In the DTM we compete with one of the toughest rivals you can imagine. On behalf of the entire executive board I would like to extend sincere congratulations to everyone who had a part in this feat. Audi Sport could not have given the Audi brand a nicer gift on its 100th anniversary."

For Audi, after 1990 (Hans-Joachim Stuck), 1991 (Frank Biela), 2002 (Laurent Aiello), 2004 (Mattias Ekström), 2007 (Mattias Ekström) and 2008 (Timo Scheider), this marks as much as the seventh DTM title and the fourth since the brand returned to the series with a manufacturer’s commitment in 2004. "No automobile manufacturer has ever consecutively won three titles in the DTM," said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "Audi has managed to do it – despite a very strong opponent. After two hat-tricks at Le Mans, now we’ve also achieved a hat-trick in the DTM. This third title no doubt was the most difficult one. But I’m sure that next year it’ll be even more difficult. ‘Thank you’ to everyone who made this great exploit possible for Audi. And congratulations to Timo (Scheider) – like last year, he won the title again on his own power."

After his triumph, the old and new DTM Champion was speechless at first. "Now I’ve been able to experience this dream, for which we all worked so long and hard, for the second time in a row – and thanks to the Audi squad, the Abt team and my family," said the 30-year-old obviously moved and with tears in his eyes. "Gary Paffett was a strong rival and won four races. But for as long as I’ve been contesting the DTM the driver with the highest points score has always been the one to become champion ..."

Scheider won twice in the 2009 season and mounted the podium at six of the ten races. He was the most consistent driver and in the end had an advantage of five points over Mercedes driver Gary Paffett. Audi’s track record is impressive as well: The brand with the four rings won four races, started from the pole position eight times, posted six fastest race laps, scored ten more points than its competitor, led 325 of 548 laps and clinched 17 of 30 possible podium places. On four occasions, Audi even claimed the entire podium.

In the finale at Hockenheim the first two laps in particular were a real thriller when Mattias Ekström, who had started from the pole position and Gary Paffett fought an extremely tough duel and touched each other several times. The radiator of Ekström’s Audi A4 DTM was damaged in the process. After four laps the Swede, who was leading the race at that time, was forced to retire and thus lost third place in the standings to Paul Di Resta.

After a start at lightning speed, Timo Scheider watched the duel between Paffett and Ekström from a choice position and only drove his conservatively set up A4 as fast as necessary to stay close to Paffett and keep Paul Di Resta in third place at bay. Scheider managed doing this again when, shortly before race end, the safety car was deployed and unexpectedly pushed the field together once more. When the race was re-started Scheider got everything right as well and crossed the finish line after 39 laps just 1.043 seconds behind Gary Paffett in second place.

By finishing fourth, Alexandre Prémat achieved his best result of the season in a strong race and was also the best driver of a year-old car. With Oliver Jarvis and Markus Winkelhock on places six and eight, two other Audi drivers, who had been fighting a captivating duel throughout the race, finished in the points. Mike Rockenfeller in ninth position just barely missed scoring a point.

In his 60th and last DTM race Tom Kristensen was struck by misfortune not just once but twice: The Dane was hit in the rear right on the first lap in the hairpin and dropped to the back of the field. After a remarkable recovery Kristensen was turned around once more after a safety car period. Martin Tomczyk, as well, became the victim of a collision on the starting lap, which forced him to retire. As a result, Timo Scheider was the only driver of an Audi A4 DTM to score a points finish at Hockenheim.

With the title win in the DTM, another successful motorsport season has come to an end for Audi, which will also enter the annals of partner ABT Sportsline’s company history: After the triumph in the Formula ADAC Masters by Daniel Abt and in the ADAC GT Masters by Christian Abt with the new Audi R8 LMS, the squad from the Allgäu managed a hat-trick as well.

2009 season statistics

Victories: Mercedes 6; Audi 4.
Pole positions: Audi 8; Mercedes 2
Fastest laps: Audi 6; Mercedes 4
Leading laps: Audi 325; Mercedes 223
Points: Audi 200; Mercedes 190

The award will be presented as part of the opening ceremony of the International Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt on February 12, 2010. A total of 23 products emerged victorious from the Product Design category of this renowned competition.

“Audi’s Design team and I are thrilled by this accolade. It convincingly acknowledges the Audi brand’s design excellence. The A5 Coupé boasts the genes of a design icon, and it’s great that the judges also see it that way,” says Stefan Sielaff, Head of Audi Design.

Wolfgang Egger, Head of Audi Group Design, adds: “The Audi A5 Coupé continues the tradition of the classic two-door sport/touring coupé: executed powerfully and boldly via elements of Audi’s progressive design language. The A5 epitomizes sportiness and elegance. Driving it also offers outstanding handling and excellent comfort on long journeys.”

The A5 thus joins the Audi A4 Avant, the Audi A3, and the Audi A2 as the fourth Audi model to win Germany’s most prestigious design award.

Some 112,000 units were sold worldwide between Audi’s launch of the A5 Coupé in June 2007 and late September 2009. The largest markets are Germany, the United States, Great Britain, France, and Italy.

The award
No other design competition expects so much from its entrants. A company may take part, for example, only if its product has already won a national or international award. Furthermore, companies must be nominated by a German state’s Ministry of Economics and legislators or by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Panel of judges
Award-winners are chosen by an independent panel of expert judges. They work in industry, at universities, in the media, or specialize in design. Judges are appointed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

History
The Design Award is the most prestigious official design award in the Federal Republic of Germany which is offered by the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology. This award was presented in 1969 for the first time – under the name “Germany’s Award for Good Design”. Thereafter, the honor was issued every two years; the award also recognized different merits every time. In 1992, the award’s name changed for the first time. In alternating years, Germany’s Award for Product Design and Germany’s Award for Champion of Design – which honored a design virtuoso for contributions to the field – were presented.

Since 2006, Design Awards of the Federal Republic of Germany have been awarded annually for outstanding achievements in the fields of product design and communication design as well as presented to a master of design. In 2010, a German Design Award for an up-and-coming designer will be presented for the first time:

The foundation
The German Design Council is a non-profit foundation currently consisting of more than 150 members – among them industry representatives, design entities, associations, and institutions. All members treasure design as a suitable means of establishing cultural and economic values. As expressed in the founding resolution drafted by Germany’s Bundestag, the Council provides a communication platform for everyone participating in the design process. The Council’s interdisciplinary nature also facilitates a one-of-a-kind forum for the cross-sector exchange of ideas which propel design forward while ensuring knowledge transfer between the German Design Council and its target groups.

French plant takes on smart fortwo electric production

A plant in Hambach, France is to be the location for future series production of the smart fortwo electric drive, it has been revealed.

Daimler AG made the announcement as French President Nicolas Sarkozy made an official visit to the plant.

From next month, approximately 1,000 vehicles are set to be produced at the plant, which will then be sent to those taking part in mobility projects across Europe to prove valuable feedback for future improvements.

It is then hoped that by 2012 the vehicle, which is equipped with the most modern lithium-ion battery, will be ready to roll off the assembly line into full-scale production.

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "The smart fortwo electric drive proves that emission-free driving in an urban environment is already feasible today.

"With our decision to locate production here at the parent plant in Hambach, we are setting the course both for series production of electric vehicles and for the future of this highly innovative assembly plant."

Writing in the Times earlier this year, TV executive Dianne Nelmes indicated that an electric smart car could be especially beneficial on London’s roads, especially for those not concerned with driving too fast.

Volkswagen of America announced its all-new Golf TDI has been selected by the Green Car Journal as a 2010 Green Car of the Year(® )finalist.( )The Green Car of the Year will be awarded during a press conference during this year's Los Angeles Auto Show Press Days, December 3, 2009.

"We're extremely pleased to have our Golf TDI nominated as one of the top five finalists for the 2010 Green Car of the Year," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America. "Since our clean diesel TDI vehicles, like the Golf TDI, deliver more than a thirty percent increase in fuel economy, emit approximately twenty-five percent less harmful greenhouse gas emissions and provide a significant increase in torque we strongly believe they represent an excellent alternative fuel vehicle that provides our customers with the best of both worlds -- tremendous fuel efficiency combined with a dynamic driving experience," added Barnes.

The Golf TDI features the same efficient and fun-to-drive 2.0-liter four cylinder clean diesel engine that is found in the highly acclaimed Jetta TDI, which currently holds a world record for averaging 67.9 miles-per-gallon when it was driven the 48 contiguous states in 19 days. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Golf TDI at an economical 30 mpg City, and 42 mpg Highway. The Golf TDI is 50-state compliant and meets the most stringent emissions standards of California.

The Golf TDI starts at $21,990, and with its affordable price point, refined ride and handling, tremendous fuel economy, and greatly reduced greenhouse gas emissions the Golf TDI proves to be a very competent eco-friendly vehicle.

Demonstrating not only the fuel efficiency of today's clean diesels, but also their ability to greatly lower our country's dependence on foreign oil EPA research has concluded that if diesels were to power one third of all light duty vehicles in the United States, the shift would save approximately 1.4 million barrels of oil a day -- equal to the daily shipments from Saudi Arabia to the U.S.

Paffett not giving up on DTM championship dreams

DTM car Mercedes-Benz Season 2008 (C-Class, W2...Image via Wikipedia

Gary Paffett has not given up on becoming DTM champion and is sticking by the mentality that it will stay this way until he has crossed the line in the final race of the season.

The 2009 Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class driver has 14 points to make up in the drivers’ championship on the leader with just two races remaining.

Dijon in France is the host for the first of these this weekend, with the potential title-decider being at Hockenheim on October 25th.

And although Paffett admits that the challenge he faces is a tough ask, he remains hopeful that the gap can still be bridged.

He said: "Although it’s hardly realistic to think that the 14 points separating me from the current leader in the drivers’ championship can be made up in the two remaining races, my motto is the same as it was when I drove my very first lap: the championship is never over until the chequered flag has been reached."

Paffett needs to win both of the remaining races if he has any rational aspirations of becoming champion, which would double his number of successes over the ten-race season.

He has previously won EuroSpeedway and Zandvoort in 2009.

Audi clear premium market leader in Europe

AUDI AG sold around 705,300 cars worldwide from January through September. The cumulative result is thus a mere 7.5 percent behind last year’s record (2008: 762,288 cars) in a situation that continues to be difficult. In the first three quarters of the year, the company’s unit sales were ahead of the projected figures, with Audi aiming to deliver approximately 900,000 cars to customers in 2009 as a whole. In September the company delivered around 88,600 cars, with sales remaining some 6.8 percent behind the strong figures of last September (2008: 95,136). The company recorded high growth in the BRIC countries, especially in China. Other emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region have also improved significantly on last year.

“Our unit sales developed better than expected during the first three quarters of the year,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “In the United States we’ve consolidated our position, and in China we’ve reasserted our leadership. And the current figures confirm our position as Europe’s leading premium brand. We have been able to significantly strengthen our brand during these months.” As the registration statistics of the European manufacturer’s organization ACEA show, Audi is the clear market leader in terms of new car registrations in the overall European premium segment.

With regard to the year as a whole, Schwarzenbauer reconfirmed that the brand still aims to achieve the unit sales target stated in January. In 2009 AUDI AG plans to sell about 900,000 vehicles.

In its second domestic market, China (including Hong Kong), AUDI AG increased its unit sales between January and September by 19.7 percent to 108,859 cars (2008: 90,934). In September itself 15,249 customers bought an Audi here – a year-on-year increase of 36.5 percent (2008: 11,169).

For the overall Asia-Pacific region the company recorded a growth of 17.2 percent to 138,523 cars (2008: 118,178). In September alone sales again increased by 31.4 percent to 19,501 cars (2008: 14,842). Besides China, strong growth especially in the Australian, South Korean and Indian markets played a role.

In the United States Audi fared significantly better than the premium market. With 59,518 cars sold, unit sales between January and September lay only 9.6 percent below those of the preceding year (2008: 65,817), while the overall premium market (Import High Group) suffered a decline of 26.7 percent. With 7,209 cars sold, unit sales declined in September by a mere 4.9 percent. Due to these comparatively good results, the Ingolstadt carmaker was able to significantly expand its market share: During the first nine months its share in the premium market grew by 1.6 percentage points to 8.3 percent. Meanwhile Audi achieved strong growth in Canada: Here the brand sold 25.3 percent more cars from January through September than in the preceding year (8,423 cars; 2008: 6,720). In September 1,111 cars were sold – 17.1 percent more than in September 2008.

Audi also exhibited an upward trend in its Western Europe export markets (Western Europe excluding Germany). Over the first nine months the unit sales of 278,582 cars were 13 percent behind the preceding year’s results (2008: 320,371). September brought a decline of 9.0 percent with 38,318 cars sold (2008: 42,119). Altogether Audi fared better than the overall market and was able to increase its market share from 3.7 percent to 3.9 percent over the last nine months. AUDI AG was able to consolidate its position and gain shares above all in Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

With 167,422 units sold, the sales figures in Germany for January to September were 10.2 percent behind the preceding year’s results (2008: 186,464). Owing above all to extended plant shutdowns in August, the German delivery figures in September dropped by 27.7 percent to 16,044 cars.

Porsche Builds New Paint Shop with Latest Environmental Technology

Porsche SEImage via Wikipedia

Porsche AG, Stuttgart is expanding its innovative automobile production at the main factory in Zuffenhausen with one of the most modern and environmentally-friendly paint shops in the world. The carcass work that began only a few weeks ago and the steel construction are set to be completed early 2010. This will be followed by the construction of the facade and technically complex facility structure.

The new facility that will be commissioned in 2011 is being built directly adjacent plant 1 and 5 on a property that previously belonged to Dürr AG, which Porsche acquired in early 2008. The paint shop will be run on two-shift-operation with a daily capacity of up to 170 vehicles from the
911 and Boxster series. The latest technologies, particularly in the area of environmental protection, are being used for the new construction. The painting process features complete dust protection as it is 100 percent encapsulated. This method not only enhances the already high quality of the vehicle paint coat, but also reduces the required amount of conditioned hall air required.

A novel electrostatic precipitator for paint dust cuts the emission of solvents and particles to a minimum. The painting process is able to do without the mandatory 60 meter-high exhaust smokestack. This is attributed to the increased amount of circulated air and the exceptionally effective exhaust air purifier that only requires a small smokestack, which extends 10 meters over the roof. Another environmentally-friendly innovation represents a highly efficient energy management system.

"With the new paint shop, Porsche is ensuring that it will deliver surpassing quality in Zuffenhausen today and tomorrow - while also conserving resources in an exceptionally ecological and economical manner", explains Wolfgang Leimgruber, head of Porsche AG Production and Logistics.

Porsche is relying on specialists from the region for the technical undertaking: The Stuttgart Maschinen- und Anlagenbaukonzern Dürr AG, as the general contractor, is equipping the painting lines with the latest application technology, driers for hardening the paint as well as control and conveyor technology. "Porsche will have one of the most modern paint shops in the world that taps new potentials in quality and productivity, thereby setting new standards", explains Ralf Dieter, Chairman of the Executive Board at Dürr AG.

The pretreatment system and cathodic paint dipping system with novel conveyor technology and the electrostatic separator for paint particles will be supplied by the Böblingen system provider, Eisenmann, a sub-supplier of Dürr AG. In connection with a comprehensive wastewater treatment facility, the environmentally-friendly technology enables level that are many times less than legal limits. "Porsche is the first automobile manufacturer in the world to use this technology", explains Dr. Matthias von Krauland, spokesperson for the Executive Board of Eisenmann AG.

Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines LimitedImage via Wikipedia

A Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series vehicle was recently used to set a new land speed record that will be entered into the Guinness World Records.

Hein Wagner reached 200 miles per hour in the Mercedes-Benz vehicle, setting a new best for a blind driver.

The South African motivational speaker was accompanied by navigator Ray Wakefield as he broke the record on the runway at Upington International Airport.

Wagner, who has been blind from birth, retained this top speed for over half a mile along the straight and described the speed as a worthy achievement for any driver.

He hopes that holding the record will help bring funding to his Vision Trust organisation, which has the aim of making technology more accessible to the blind.

The Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series comes equipped with a 6.0-litre supercharged V12 biturbo engine that can accelerate from still to 62 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds.

According to Mercedes-Benz, "the limited-slip rear axle differential transfers power directly to the road without compromise, making the SL 65 AMG one of the highest-performing sports cars in the roadster category".

Lewis Hamilton gained his second victory of a fast-improving season as he led from start to finish to win the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver began from pole and despite temporarily losing the use of his KERS system early on never looked in danger of being overtaken.

Hamilton added that the victory provided the perfect redemption after the Italian Grand Prix, where he spun out on the final lap when looking set to finish on the podium.

He said: "The race was physically tough for all the drivers but it was actually quite straightforward for me. I made a good start and knew I was running longer than the guys behind me so I was able to bridge the gap back to them.

"We came here hoping for a good result. I wanted to redeem myself after the last lap in Monza and we got it."

Hamilton has now moved onto 37 points in the drivers’ championship, giving him a realistic chance of finishing in the top five come the end of the season, which has three races remaining.

The reigning Formula One World Champion cannot regain his title, but is only three points shy of fifth spot, while in the constructors’ championship Vodafone McLaren Mercedes are the same deficit adrift of third spot on 59 points.

Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro

Exceptional performance and breathtaking dynamism coupled with the intense sensations of open-top driving: Audi presents the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. Its lightweight cloth top opens and closes fully automatically; several body parts are made of a carbon fiber composite material.

The V10 engine produces 386 kW (525 hp) and launches the open-top two-seater to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 313 km/h (194.49 mph). Featuring technologies such as the Audi Space Frame (ASF), quattro permanent all-wheel drive, full-LED headlights and with an innovative seatbelt microphone available as an option, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro is the new top-of-the-range Audi.

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro makes a powerful statement. The sculptured lines of the emotion-packed, high-performance sports car are a fascinating and unique interpretation of its dynamism. Unlike the Coupé, the Spyder does not have sideblades behind the doors. The side panels and the large cover over the storage compartment for the cloth top are made of a carbon fiber composite. Two arched cowls, which extend to the spoiler lip and include large, integrated air vents, give the rear of the open-top two-seater a powerful profile.

Like every open-top Audi, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro has a cloth top – an uncompromising solution for a high-performance sports car. The soft top’s approximate weight is a mere 30 kilograms (66.14 lb); it thus keeps the vehicle’s total weight and center of gravity low. The top takes up little space when open and is a harmonious design element when closed. It tapers off to two slim fins extending to the trailing edge of the car, emphasizing the elongated silhouette.

The electrohydraulic soft top opens and closes in 19 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h (31.07 mph). When opened, it folds like a Z into its storage compartment over the V10 engine. The compartment cover opens and closes automatically. The heated glass window, which is separate from the cloth top, is lowered into the bulkhead. It can be independently raised and lowered at the press of a switch, with the top up or down. An additional net-like wind deflector comes standard and can be latched into the bulkhead behind the seats in two easy steps.

The top, which comprises an outer skin of a leakproof textile fabric and the headliner, is fully compatible with high-speed driving. When driving at moderate speeds with the top up, interior noise levels in the R8 Spyder are barely higher than in the Coupé. The bulkhead includes integrated rollover protection in the form of two strong, spring-tensioned plates. Head/thorax side bags in the backrests protect the passengers in the event of a side impact. Full-size airbags stand at the ready in the event of a head-on collision. In a rear-end collision, the integral head restraint system reduces the risk of whiplash injuries.

In the version with manual transmission, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro weighs only 1,720 kilograms thanks primarily to its aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) body. Despite reinforcements in the area of the sills, the center tunnel, the rear wall, the floor pan and the A- and B-pillars, the body weighs only 216 kilograms (476.2 lb) – just 6 kilograms (13.23 lb) more than that of the R8 Coupé. The high stiffness of the ASF body, which includes an integrated engine frame of ultra-lightweight magnesium, provides the foundation for the car’s dynamic handling and superior safety.

Close attention to detail: the design

Numerous details demonstrate that the Audi designers put their hearts into the design of the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. The air inlets in the nose, which direct air across the three radiators, and the lip of the front skirt are painted high-gloss black. The struts in the broad, low, single-frame grille are finely coated with chrome. The standard full-LED headlights are technical works of art. Their reflectors resemble open mussel shells; the daytime running lights appear to be a homogeneous strip, but actually comprise 24 individual LEDs that form a curve at the lower edge of the headlight.

The full-LED headlights from Audi are unmatched by its international competitors. Light-emitting diodes are used for the low beams, the high beams, the daytime running lights and the turn signals. With a color temperature of 6,000 Kelvin, the LED light is very similar to daylight, making it easier on the eyes when driving at night. Additional strengths include excellent light distribution, long service life and extremely low energy consumption.

The side sills of the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro are broad and angular. V10 badges on the flanks allude to the power of the engine. A dark surface between the rear lights emphasizes the car’s width. The chambers of the lights are colored dark red, with LEDs generating a three-dimensional light pattern. The exhaust system ends in two large, oval tailpipes, and the fully lined underbody ends in an upturned diffuser. The rear spoiler extends automatically at higher speeds.

Audi offers the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro with a choice of three colors for the top. The body is available in eleven paint finishes, with metallic and pearl effect finishes standard. The windshield frame is coated with anodized aluminum.

Sporty luxury: the interior

The open-top two-seater from Audi features a generously spacious interior. The three-spoke leather multifunction sport steering wheel is flattened at the bottom as in a race car, and the low-mounted, electrically adjustable seats guide and support the body perfectly.

Quality of fit and finish is extraordinary and the controls are clear and logical. The standard driver information system includes a lap timer for recording lap times. The instruments and the gear lever knob feature red rings. The pedals, the footrests and the shift paddles of the optional R tronic are in aluminum look. Highlighting the list of standard equipment are a generous full-leather package featuring Fine Nappa leather, an excellent sound system from Bang & Olufsen, a deluxe automatic air conditioning system and heated seats. Six different interior colors are available.

Many additional fine features documents the top status of the Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. The leather for the seats are colored with pigments that reflect the infrared component of sunlight, which keeps the seats up to 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) cooler.

Door sill strips coated with aluminum and adorned with black satin finish applications impart an air of luxurious sportiness. Three storage compartments are integrated into the rear bulkhead, one of which contains the optional CD changer or Audi music interface, if desired. There is a front compartment for 100 liters (3.53 cu ft) of luggage.

The latest version of the navigation system plus with MMI operating logic is also standard in the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. It features higher resolution and particularly fast route calculation. The system’s most visible new feature is the high-resolution, 6.5-inch display. The topographic view can be scrolled in any direction. The system can be combined optionally with a rearview camera that serves as a parking aid.

Audi offers custom extras, such as exclusive leather packages and special inlays. A worldwide first is the optional seatbelt microphone for the hands-free unit, which makes it possible to talk on the phone even with the top down on the highway. Three small, flat microphones are integrated into both seatbelts. At least one of them is ideally positioned relative to the speaker when the belt is on. There is a fourth microphone in the windshield frame.

Uncompromising power: the engine

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro, which was developed in cooperation with quattro GmbH, dazzles with uncompromising performance. The V10 engine with the aluminum crankcase, much of which is hand-built, follows in the grand motorsports tradition at Audi. The normally aspirated engine produces 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm. Peak output of 386 kW (525 hp) is reached at 8,000 rpm, and the rev limit is not reached until 8,700 rpm. Specific power output is 100.9 hp per liter of displacement; each hp only needs to move 3.3 kilograms (7.28 lb) of weight.

Performance reflects this awesome potential: 0 – 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.1 seconds; 0 – 200 km/h (124.27 mph) in 12.7 seconds; top speed is 313 km/h (194.49 mph) with the six-speed manual transmission. As load and revs increase, the engine unfolds the rich, unmistakable Audi ten-cylinder sound – a powerful, throaty roar with musical undertones.

The 5.2-liter engine features FSI direct fuel injection. The high 12.5:1 compression ratio that this enables contributes to the high performance and good fuel efficiency. Equipped with a manual transmission, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro consumes an average of 14.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (15.79 US mpg) – a good figure given its power. With R tronic, this figure improves to 13.9 liters (16.92 US mpg). Dry sump lubrication, another motorsports technology, ensures that the supply of oil is maintained even at the maximum lateral acceleration of 1.2 g.

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI is also available with an optional automatic six-speed transmission. The R tronic offers a normal and a sport program as well as a fully automatic and a manual mode. The manual mode allows the driver to make lightning-fast gear changes using the joystick on the center tunnel or with the paddles on the steering wheel. The open-air sports car also comes with “Launch Control” – a program that manages engagement of the clutch perfectly to maximize acceleration at start.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive features a central viscous coupling and distributes power to all four wheels with a heavy rear bias. It works together with the locking differential on the rear axle to provide significantly greater traction, stability, cornering speed and precision. It is the superior technology – in particular for a high-performance sports car.

Dazzling performance: the chassis
The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro has a 2.65-meter (8.69-ft) wheelbase and a 43:57 axle load distribution. Like in a race car, there are double triangular wishbones made of aluminum at all four wheels. The hydraulic rack-and-pinion power steering conveys highly precise road contact.

The chassis is tuned for good comfort, thanks in part to standard Audi magnetic ride technology. This uses magnetic fields in the shock absorbers to adjust their response to road conditions within milliseconds and adapt to the driver’s style. The driver can choose between two base characteristics. A sports suspension with conventional shock absorbers is available as an option.

The R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro rolls on 19-inch wheels of 10-spoke Y design. The front rims are shod with 235/35 tires, with 295/30 tires at the back. 305/30 tires are optionally available. The brakes offer impressive performance: The four discs are internally ventilated and perforated, with eight-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers at the back. Optionally available from Audi are oversized carbon fiber-ceramic discs that are extremely lightweight, robust and long-lived. The ESP stabilization system has a Sport mode and can also be completely deactivated. The brake system includes an assist function that facilitates starting on gradients.

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro is built by quattro GmbH at the Neckarsulm plant. The vehicle, including the ASF, is largely hand-built. The open-top two-seater will be launched in Germany in the first quarter of 2010. Its base price will be 156,400 euros.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

Bayerische Motoren Werke AGImage via Wikipedia

Innovative concept car gets M3 power with record-breaking supercar economy and emissions figures BMW at the Frankfurt Motor Show

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is BMW’s most innovative concept car ever and sets a new performance car agenda. Its unique powertrain, ground-breaking performance potential and exo-skeletal style bodywork crafted from aerodynamic knowledge gained in Formula One set it apart from anything previously seen.

Powered by a three-cylinder turbo diesel engine and two electric motors, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is capable of BMW M3 performance but with a fraction of that model’s CO2 emissions and far greater fuel economy. The striking concept car is showcased with a powertrain producing an anticipated 356hp and 800Nm of torque for true supercar performance. However, the vehicle has been designed to be capable of recording 75.1mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 99g/km.

The vehicle’s impressive performance figures improve further when it runs solely in hybrid mode. When taking the sources of electrical energy generation into account the CO2 emissions of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics drop to a staggering 51g/km*.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics highlights a number of technologies that will appear on BMWs of the near future. BMW’s Air Curtain system that channels air through a front valance with the air exiting ahead of the front wheel is fitted. The Air Curtain system’s exiting air flow effectively deflects air from entering the wheel arch and causing turbulence thus improving all round performance.

The bodywork of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics also takes styling cues from the marque’s involvement in Formula 1. The exo-skeletal appearance of elements of the design mean the vehicle cleaves through the air with the least possible resistance. The drag co-efficient is 0.22 – the lowest figure of any BMW road car. The subtle folds of the bodywork that sit proud of the passenger cocoon create downforce without the need to have large spoilers.

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine is another feature that indicates production potential. In isolation this new engine is capable of recording peak power of 163hp, a new record in terms of output per litre at 109hp, and a peak torque of 290Nm. Mounted transversely and ahead of the rear axle, the diesel engine can be the sole power source for the vehicle or it can work in conjunction with the electric drive. Alternatively the diesel engine can be used to charge the electric drive battery pack.

The hybrid drivetrain features two electric motors – one on each axle. At lower speeds just the electric drive mode functions. The rear axle motor can produce up to 38kW of power and 290Nm of torque, while the second axle motor is capable of 60kW and 220Nm of torque. However, an overboost function allows the driver to top this up to 84kW for a 30 second boost and 104kW for a 10 second power enhancer. When taking all three power sources into account these figures equate to a car that records a peak power of 356hp and torque of 800Nm. Power is transmitted to the road via an enhanced version of BMW’s existing seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics has a range of 31 miles when driving only on electric mode. Combined with the three-cylinder diesel engine this extends to a total possible distance between fill-ups and charges of 431 miles. Using a conventional domestic power source at 220 V would result in the vehicle being fully recharged after 2.5 hours. Access to a slightly more powerful 380 V sees the charge time drop to 44 minutes.

Unlike other hybrid vehicles that use existing vehicle architecture and then add a hybrid drivetrain, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics isn’t penalised by weight. A V8 or larger capacity engine that would be the norm for a supercar has been substituted by a compact three-cylinder engine and two electric motors. This is fitted to an aluminium chassis to further save weight. The result of this is that the vehicle tips the scales at just 1,395kgs.

The use of low rolling resistance tyres has also taken on another twist to offer something unique. Normally customer demand for larger alloy wheels with wider tyres is at odds with aerodynamic and rolling resistance targets. However, BMW engineers working with Michelin developed a solution to this conundrum. The contact patch of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics has effectively been turned 90 degrees by virtue of specifying larger diameter wheel rims. Larger, but thinner tyres result in the same percentage of rubber being in contact with the road, but the cross section of the tyre as a whole is smaller making for less rolling resistance and greater aerodynamic efficiency.

BMW is renowned for using lightweight materials as part of its EfficientDynamics strategy and this concept car is no different. The chassis and suspension are made entirely from aluminium while the roof and the outer skin of the doors are made of a lightweight polycarbonate glass. This material also comes with special properties that allow the glass to darken in sunlight to keep the cabin temperature at the desired level.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics also showcases BMW’s Thermo Electric Generator currently fitted to the exhaust system of test cars and being developed for production. This works on the principle of the Seebeck effect to generate an electrical current courtesy of the temperature change between two metal based semi-conductors. This system alone generates enough charge to power some of the auxiliary features.

Inside, and the 3D Head-up Display is another feature that highlights at possible production car capability as does a new incarnation of iDrive with a touchpad screen. The vehicle’s 4.6 metre length, 1.9 metre width and 1.24 metre height permit a 2+2 configuration that makes this supercar a practical form of transport. With the rear seats folded the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics even has room for two sets of golf clubs that can be stowed in the 150-litre luggage area.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is the centrepiece of the BMW stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Click here for more images and video footage of this model and other new products at the show.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes have extended their corporate partnership agreement with Santander.

The bank has seen its brand awareness rise substantially, particularly in the UK, since joining forces with the team at the start of the 2007 Formula One season.

And an extension between the two parties has been agreed, meaning that both Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen will continue to display the Sanatander logo on their racing kits.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said: "We are extremely pleased to have extended our hugely successful global partnership with Santander.

"Santander is a great ‘fit’ with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and our triumphs on the global stage of Formula One."

Meanwhile, Santander have successfully title-sponsored three races in the sport’s calendar since beginning the partnership - the British, German and Italian Grands Prix.

The banking group was also the sponsor when Hamilton became Formula One World Champion in 2008, scooping the title by one point after finishing fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

New Opel Astra

  • Spirited: Athletic sculptured design promises a thrilling driving experience
  • Agile: New mechatronic chassis raises bar in class for handling and comfort
  • Efficient: Clean and powerful engine range lowers carbon footprint
  • Upscale: Exceptional technologies and innovations in the compact class

Frankfurt/Rüsselsheim. Designed for sporty good-looks, engineered with innovative technology and equipped with a full clean powertrain line-up, the all-new Opel Astra, debuting as a five-door hatchback, is set to re-energize Europe’s compact car segment.

Grounded in the compact class tradition Opel initiated in 1936 with the first Kadett, the Astra has consistently made the top three list of Europe’s best-selling compacts – a segment which accounts for 27 percent of the total car market. Astra sales make up a third of all Opel/Vauxhall purchases, for an average volume of nearly 500,000 units per year.

The new Astra brings many comfort and safety features to the compact class that the Insignia first introduced to mid-sized cars. Exceptional technologies like an all-new mechatronic chassis, the most advanced lighting system, a front camera that recognizes traffic signs and seat technology with the best ergonomics will be available.

“The new Astra raises the bar in its class with exciting design, dynamic driving and great practical features,” says Alain Visser, Vice President Sales, Marketing & Aftersales Opel/Vauxhall.

Opel’s new design language reinterpreted for the compact class

The new Opel Astra brings into the compact class its own interpretation of the brand’s award-winning design language of combining sculptural artistry with German precision first seen in the Insignia. Its strong coupé-like silhouette and stylish details add to a new handsome look. Elegant proportions give it a strong, cab-forward silhouette, with a steeply-raked windshield and falling rear roofline, adding visual excitement to the traditional hatchback format.

Also new to the Astra are double wing-shapes in each of the rear lights and a dynamic inverted blade on the flank that visually connects to the powerful movement of the rear window and C-pillar.

“The design cues introduced in the Insignia, like the wing and the blade, have been given a fresh interpretation in the Astra, because it’s important that each Opel model has its own personality,” says Mark Adams, Vice President of Design, General Motors Europe.

The interior echoes the flowing forms of the bodywork: sweeping lines, curvaceous shapes and the quality of the execution are all part of Opel’s design language. A signature design cue is the wraparound wing shape of the instrument panel that arcs into the top of the door moldings. The effect is a warm embrace of the occupants, providing a welcoming ambience.

New mechatronic chassis system: Watt’s link in rear axle

The Opel Astra’s chassis has been developed as a mechatronic system that fully integrates mechanical functions and electronic controls. The new Astra retains the fun-to-drive character of the previous model, with significant improvements in steering response and ride comfort. While the chassis has the proven McPherson strut layout at the front, Opel engineers in Rüsselsheim are the first in the world to combine a compound crank rear axle with a Watts link.

The Astra benefits from an all new rear axle. Keeping the advantages of size, weight and overall efficiency of the compound crank rear axle layout design. Opel engineers added a cleverly positioned Watts link. This supports lateral forces on the suspension while cornering. It also makes the car dynamic and agile without compromising on stability and comfort.

FlexRide adaptive suspension offers the additional option of driver-selective ride control and personalization. Like the Insignia, it can be ordered with the clever Opel FlexRide electronic driving system, a rarity in this class, which offers the driver three settings – standard, Sport and Tour – while continuously adapting to changes in driving style and cornering speed.

Driving dynamics are improved by wider front and rear tracks, increased by 56 mm and 70 mm respectively. While the wheelbase is 71 mm longer, the proportionately greater increases in track give the car a wider footprint, which contributes to more stable handling and an inherently better road-holding capability.

A core body structure stiffer than that of its predecessor provides a firm base for optimizing the new Astra’s handling and ride capabilities. In addition, this helps reduce noise and vibration inside the cabin.

Clean engine line-up reduces emissions by 12 percent

The new Astra will launch with a complete line-up of eight engines ranging from 70 kW/95 hp to 132 kW/180 hp, perfectly illustrating Opel’s philosophy of providing drivers with affordable, real-life efficiency.

The Astra’s line-up of powertrains with manual transmission provides impressive performance and overall cuts CO2 emissions by more than 12 percent compared with the current generation. The average fuel consumption of the diesel engines is 4.6 l/100 km and only 6.1 l/100 km for the gasoline line-up.

The four diesel engines, which are expected to represent almost half of the new Astra cars sold in Europe at launch, deliver 95 to 160 hp. They all consume under 5.0 l/100 km and do not emit more than 129 g/km CO2 when equipped with the manual transmission.

The gasoline range comprises naturally-aspirated and turbocharged 1.4 and 1.6-liter engines, giving a power bandwidth from 74 kW/100 hp to 132 kW/180 hp. The entry level version in the gasoline line-up emits only 129 g/km CO2.

Innovative technologies brought to the compact segment

“Opel’s mission to make high tech innovations accessible has proven to be successful in the Insignia. We’ve set ourselves an even more ambitious goal in bringing most of these features to the compact segment with the new Astra,” says Hans Demant, Managing Director of Opel.

Other innovative technical features introduced to the compact class in the new Astra:

  • A new generation of bi-xenon Advanced Forward Lighting (AFL+) that changes its intensity and reach to suit prevailing driving and road conditions using nine different lighting functions.
  • The Opel Eye front camera system, which recognizes road signs and warns the driver when the car inadvertently departs from its lane.
  • Ergonomic Sport Seats can extend 280 millimeters in length to accommodate long legs. They offer cushion extension, cushion tilt function, 4-way lumbar support and a body-supporting seat contour using high-density foam. It is the only seat in the compact class to receive the much coveted seal of approval from Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. (Action for Healthy Backs, known as AGR), an independent panel of ergonomics experts and doctors in Germany.
  • FlexFloor, which enables easy stowage of a wide variety of cargo. The trunk floor is moveable and can be positioned at three levels by engaging ergonomically-designed fixtures near each corner of the trunk.
  • FlexFix, Opel’s innovative bike-carrier, is integrated behind the rear bumper and offered as an option on the new Astra hatchback. It makes transporting bikes easy and convenient because it slides out of the rear bumper like a drawer when a release lever near the lip of the trunk is pulled.

All data refer to the European base model with standard equipment. The consumption data according to 1999/100/EC takes into consideration the vehicle’s curb weight as stipulated by this regulation. Additional equipment can lead to slightly higher fuel consumption and therefore CO2 exhaust emissions than the declared values. In addition, they can raise the vehicle’s curb weight and in some cases also increase the gross vehicle weight, the maximum allowable axle loads and respectively reduce the permitted trailer load. Therefore the maximum speed may be decreased while acceleration time can be increased. The published performance figures are possible with the vehicle’s curb weight.

Whitmarsh would not change Hamilton attitude

Martin Whitmarsh at the 2006 Bahrain Grand Prix.Image via Wikipedia

Martin Whitmarsh has stood behind the racing mentality of Lewis Hamilton following his crash on the final lap of the Italian Grand Prix.

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver would have been guaranteed third place and a podium with a steady last lap at Monza.

However, as he pushed to try and catch a rival, he clipped a curve, which resulted in him spinning into a wall and retiring from the race.

Whitmarsh, the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Team Principal, told the BBC: "Lewis is just a racer, he pushes and pushes. You don’t want to change that in a great, great champion and a great racing driver.

"He was racing to the very end and that’s how he is. He was there fighting for position and his competitive spirit kept him pushing until the end. He wants to win and compete, that’s what makes him who he is."

After the race, Hamilton apologised to the team for his error, although teammate Heikki Kovalainen did collect three points for finishing in sixth spot in Italy.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes have now picked up 47 points this season to sit in fourth spot in the constructors’ championship.

Nine World Premieres at the IAA 2009: Volkswagen presents its update on present and future

Volkswagen Passenger CarsImage via Wikipedia

E-Up! – Clever city specialist with electric motor for the year 2013

L1 – Pioneering two-seater with TDI hybrid consumes just 1.49 litres diesel

Polo three-door – New base version will cost 12,150 Euros in Germany

BlueMotion fuel economy records – 3.3 litres in the Polo, 3.8 in the Golf and 4.4 in the Passat

Golf R – Highest performance Golf ever with 21 percent gain in fuel efficiency

R-Line and Exclusive – Golf, Scirocco, Passat CC, Golf Estate customised

Multivan / California – New “Bulli” with fuel consumption reduced by up to 1.9 litre

At the 63rd International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Volkswagen is presenting an automotive update on the present and future. The exceptionally large range of products – a total of nine premieres ranging from the zero-emissions E-Up! concept to a near-production prototype of the sensational 1-Liter car, the L1, the economical Polo three-door, super-efficient BlueMotion versions of the Polo (3.3 l/100 km), Golf (3.8 l/100 km) and Passat (4.4 l/100 km) to the super sports car, the Golf R (270 PS), and the new generation of the Multivan / California (T5). Many customised models – such as three new, dynamic R-Line versions (Golf, Scirocco and Passat CC) and the first vehicle under the new top label Volkswagen Exclusive (Golf Estate) – complete the range of IAA premieres.

The common denominator of all of these new Volkswagens: maximum efficiency. And this applies to the all-wheel drive Golf R and the large T5 as well, because even on these two models fuel savings amount to more than 20 percent. On the time line between today, tomorrow and the future, these new models of the Polo, Golf, Passat, Multivan, California and the five-seat version of the natural gas powered Touran TSI EcoFuel (with 670 kilometre range) – also being shown in Frankfurt for the first time – represent the sustainable and affordable technologies of the present. Creating a window to the immediate future, on the other hand, are the E-Up! and L1 concept cars.

World premiere 1: E-Up! concept car

The zero-emissions E-Up! concept is based on modules of the New Small Family expected for the year 2011. However, at a length of 3.19 meters it is even more compact and shows Volkswagen’s vision of a potential city specialist of the year 2013 powered purely by electricity. Stylistically, the powerful and clearly drawn lines of the E-Up! body follow the new Volkswagen “design DNA” and show cult potential. That is because, it is the first ultra-compact to appear in a long time that is so appealing while revealing timeless qualities extending beyond class boundaries. It does not rely on retro styling, but instead points in new directions. Inside, the smallest Volkswagen of all times also astonishes with space utilization never before realised in this form. Three adults and one child can sit comfortably in the E-Up! And on one charge of its lithium-ion batteries they can travel about 130 emissions-free kilometres through the city.

World premiere 2: L1 concept car

The L1 concept is unique in the world today. Thanks to a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) body, it weighs just 380 kilograms. The two-seater is powered by a new common rail turbo-diesel (two-cylinder TDI) and an electric motor. With its average fuel consumption of 1.49 litres diesel per 100 kilometres, this fully road-ready and extremely aerodynamic L1 (Cd 0.195!) is advancing to become the most fuel-efficient hybrid automobile in the world. CO2 emissions of the 160 km/h fast concept car are just 39 g/km. If the L1 were to also go into production in 2013, it would debut an entirely new lightweight car concept and introduce a new era in automotive production.

World premiere 3: Polo three-door

As a world premiere at the IAA, Volkswagen is also presenting the latest offspring of the Polo family: a spirited three-door car. Its longer doors compared to the five-door version, new styling of the row of side windows and dynamic, sporty C-pillars give the car a nearly coupe-like appearance in its side profile. When it launches this autumn, the extremely elegant and safe three-door car will be available in six engine versions (from 44 kW / 60 PS to 77 kW / 105 PS) and three equipment variants (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline). The model’s entry-level version will now be the three-door Polo 1.2 Trendline with ESP at a price of 12,150 Euros. The Polo range is gaining tremendous momentum here. The declared goal is to accelerate sales of the Polo to match those of Europe’s most successful car, the Golf.

World premieres 4, 5 and 6:
Polo, Golf and Passat as BlueMotion cars

All three are celebrating their world premieres as production versions at the IAA; and all three can be ordered starting this autumn. In Frankfurt, Volkswagen will be showing what is feasible when the best available yet affordable technologies of our times are sensibly combined – in the new BlueMotion generation of the Polo, Golf and Passat. All three are celebrating their world premieres as production versions at the IAA; and all three can be ordered later this autumn. Each of these pioneering BlueMotion models is redefining the benchmarks for fuel economy, emissions and costs in its own segment. Take the example of the Polo BlueMotion (55 kW / 75 PS). The second generation of this trendsetter, with an average fuel consumption of just 3.3 litres diesel per 100 kilometres, is advancing to become the “3-litre fuel economy car” of the modern era and the most economical five-seater in the world. Its 45 litre fuel tank enables a theoretical driving range of 1,363 kilometres! The affordable price of this high-tech fuel-saver in Germany: 16,575 Euros.

Visits to the filling station also becomes infrequent on the new Golf BlueMotion (77 kW / 105 PS). Thanks to its low fuel consumption of just 3.8 litres diesel per 100 kilometres (99 g/km CO2), it is the most fuel-efficient car in its class. Its theoretical range is 1,447 kilometres (55 litre tank). The new Golf BlueMotion will be launched in Germany at prices starting at 21,650 Euros. The driving range of the new Passat BlueMotion (77 kW / 105 PS) may very well be record-setting. With an average fuel consumption of just 4.4 litres diesel (114 g/km CO2), it can cover 1,591 kilometres thanks to its 70 litre tank! No other car of this size on the road today is more economical. The BlueMotionTechnologies aboard the three super-economy cars make up a comprehensive package of extremely diverse high-tech components such as energy recovery in braking (regenerative braking) and a Stop-Start system (engine shut-off, e.g. at red lights) as well as custom features. Volkswagen will offer the Passat BlueMotion with these sustainable technologies and equipment features in Germany at prices starting at 27,850 Euros.

World premiere 7: Golf R as most powerful Golf ever

Automotive passion has always had something to do with performance. However, Volkswagen is demonstrating – in the world premiere of the new 199 kW / 270 PS Golf R at the IAA – that fuel consumption values can be corrected downward even in the high-end sports car area. The highlight here: While in the now retired Golf R32 (184 kW / 250 PS), 10.7 litres of fuel was processed by the injection system every 100 kilometres, on the new Golf R – thanks to a boosted high-tech TSI – the figure is just 8.5 litres, which is 2.2 litres or 21 percent less! The all-wheel drive Golf R (350 Newton-meter torque between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm) sprints to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds (Golf R DSG: 5.5 seconds) and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Two of the many identifying visual features of this exceptional Golf conceptualised by Volkswagen Individual: newly developed LED taillights and LED daytime running lights. The Golf R can be ordered in Germany starting at the end of this year.

Four new model variants: R-Line and Exclusive

The customising specialists at Volkswagen Individual have designed the “R-Line” for all those customers who want highly dynamic styling on the car body and interior in the spirit of the power-enhanced R models, yet they prefer a petrol or diesel engine with less power. The company is simultaneously presenting three entirely new models in global premieres at the IAA: the Golf R-Line, Scirocco R-Line and Passat CC R-Line. They will all be launched on the market this autumn. The Volkswagen Individual brand has also been repositioned; in the future it will market products under the “Volkswagen Exclusive” label and bundle a range of especially high-end models and equipment features. A dual premiere: The first Exclusive model to be offered will be the brand new Golf Estate; with its comprehensive set of high-end feature upgrades it is crossing over from an all-purpose vehicle to a lifestyle estate car.

World premieres 8 and 9: Multivan and California

Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan and California – those are the four basic versions of a millions bestseller. World premieres of the Multivan and California at the IAA represent a new generation of successful models now being launched by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The wide-ranging and improved new editions are more fuel efficient, lower in emissions, more economical, comfortable, safe, clever and impressive than ever before. Advance sales for all four basic versions are starting during the IAA. The body design of the bestseller now follows the new Volkswagen “design DNA”. This model series, referred to as the “T5” internally at Volkswagen, has also made a huge technical leap forward. Consider the engines: The new, more fuel efficient and extremely quiet turbo-diesels (TDIs from 62 kW / 84 PS to 132 kW / 180 PS) now have common rail injection. The new TDI engine enabled reductions in fuel consumption values of up to 1.9 litres and or an equivalent of 52 g/km in CO2 emissions; all engines also conform to the EU-5 emissions standard. A global first in this class is the optional 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) that is being introduced. Another option is a new, electronically controlled all-wheel drive system (4Motion).

- Featured content includes Q7 TDI® clean diesel engine manufacturing
- TDI segment debuts on Science Channel on Sept 18 with encore broadcasts on Discovery Channel on Sept 24
- Audi launching two TDI clean diesel models in the USA within a year

Audi today that TDI clean diesel technology will be a featured segment on the Discovery Communications program, “How It’s Made” premiering on Science Channel on Friday, September 18, 2009, 9 p.m. ET/PT, with an encore broadcast on the Discovery Channel on Thursday, September 24, 2009, 7:00 and 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The steps taken to assemble the Audi V6 3.0 TDI clean diesel engine show a high level of detail, from block machining through final vehicle assembly. Audi launched its first TDI clean diesel model in the United States earlier this year with the Q7 SUV. Featuring 225 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, the Q7 TDI has begun building awareness with American luxury car consumers that modern clean diesel technology is markedly improved in emissions, quietness, ride comfort and overall performance. With a range of over 600 highway miles per tank, the Q7 TDI employs 50-state clean diesel technology, which translates into 30 percent better fuel economy and a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas when compared to gasoline engines of similar size.

“American consumers are rapidly awakening to the advantages that TDI clean diesel technology can provide,” said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “TDI is a ready-now solution to American concerns about fuel consumption and emissions. Programs, such as ‘How It’s Made’, can only build greater awareness of clean diesel’s modern practicality.”

The EPA has calculated that if only one-third of the vehicles on American roads ran on clean diesel, the U.S. would use 1.5 million fewer barrels of oil each day. Audi was the first German car manufacturer to combine turbocharging with diesel engine technology in 1989, and has continued to evolve its technology ever since. Audi Sport helped prepare the way for TDI clean diesel in the United States by racing the R10 TDI sports car from 2006-2008 in the American Le Mans Series and sweeping the major endurance races at the 12 Hours of Sebring (Sebring, Fla.) and the 10-hour Petit Le Mans in Atlanta. The R10 TDI also won all three 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance races in which it competed from 2006-2008. The R15 TDI continued the TDI clean diesel performance tradition by winning the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race in March 2009.

In late November, Audi will launch its second model featuring TDI clean diesel technology. The Audi A3 TDI offers the same sophistication, styling, operating efficiency and ride comfort that has distinguished Audi throughout its model range. Standard amenities include dual-zone climate control, leather seating surfaces, cargo nets behind the front seats, spit folding 40/60 rear seats and rear seat arm rest with dual cup holders. Some distinctive options include Audi Navigation plus with RDS traffic, the expansive two-panel Panorama sunroof, and Bluetooth® hands-free phone preparation.

The pulling power of torque is the signature performance feature in all diesel models, and the A3 TDI clean diesel is no different. Offering 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, this model performs briskly and efficiently with unmatched performance with its EPA-estimated 30/42 city/highway fuel efficiency.

The competitive set for the A3 TDI clean diesel is unique. Only one competitor is currently playing in the field of fuel-efficient compact luxury vehicles, but does not offer the driving experience or the 5-door flexibility that includes 40/60 split rear-folding seats. The A3 TDI offers more superlatives in value, including a standard S line exterior sport appearance for 2010, a tighter steering turning circle, a top track speed of 130 mph, as well as a 12-year limited warranty against corrosion perforation.

The Audi approach toward efficiency is not only catered toward TDI clean diesel vehicles. Audi is also the first car company in the United States to equip 100 percent of its gasoline engines with FSI® direct injection technology beginning with model year 2010. Audi began racing with FSI direct injection technology in 2000 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and American Le Mans Series with the R8 FSI prototype racing sports car. Once this technology first became available for U.S. Audi customers in late 2004 with the introduction of the 2005 A6 3.2 FSI quattro, the list of Audi vehicles sold in the U.S. with FSI direct injection technology has continued to grow.

New Opel Insignia Drops in on LondonImage by gmeurope via Flickr

  • Prize collection: Top model gathered 24 awards from 11 countries – and counting
  • Success story: Insignia is Europe’s best-selling sedan
Rüsselsheim. The Opel Insignia marks its first birthday this month and already has much to celebrate. From the moment the German car manufacturer’s flagship model was launched last fall, the rave reviews began. It turned the heads of design experts, impressed technology geeks with its innovations and quickly became a best-seller among the buying public. The Insignia sedan is number one in Europe in its class.

In less than one year’s time, the Opel Insignia has won 24 prizes and awards – starting with Europe’s Car of the Year 2009 – from pan-European groups, expert panels and consumers in 11 different countries. It has been named Best Executive Car in the UK and Slovenia, Best Family Car in Ireland twice and best car for fleet customers in the UK, Austria, Denmark and Portugal. It even has received accolades for its safety from Spain.

So much of that spectacular success is due to the new design language of “sculptural artistry meets German precision” that was introduced in the Insignia and now is being carried forward to the compact class with the debut of new generation Astra next week at the Frankfurt motor show. The Insignia also features an array of technological innovations – such as new-generation AFL+ headlamps, the Opel Eye front camera, FlexRide chassis and ergonomic seats – that have swayed judges and the public alike.

“We are very proud of the Insignia and the talented team that has made it so wildly popular,” says Carl-Peter Forster, Head of the Supervisory Board at Opel. “We can’t wait to see what’s ahead for the new Astra, but we are sure it, too will be as well liked.”

Extraordinary market launch – Insignia named “Car of the Year 2009”

In November 2008, an international panel of 59 specialized journalists from 23 countries granted it the much-coveted “European Car of the Year” award. With their decision, the jury underscored the Insignia’s role as a milestone for the Opel brand.

“Many jury members praised the car’s looks and eye-catching design. But the new mid-size class car offers much more than just elegance and style,” the panel said. Thanks to its superb performance in the categories design, safety, handling and performance, the Insignia beat out 37 competitors to win the title.

This was just the beginning. Opel’s new design language continues to get one accolade after another, including “red dot design award” and “Auto Bild Design Award.” Mark Adams, head of Opel Design, was honored with “DESIGNBEST 2009.” These are among the most highly recognized distinctions of their kind in expert circles. The Romanian magazine Auto Mondial, too, was moved by the Insignia’s aerodynamic efficiency.

Expressive design, yes, but innovative technology too

Two separate British groups awarded the Insignia “Executive Car of the Year.” The Danes liked the Insignia ecoFLEX and its frugal 5.2 liter per 100 km fuel consumption. The Sports Tourer impressed a panel of Polish judges. These awards and others underline the fact that all versions of the Insignia score high for both private and business purposes.

At the same time the judges and juries recognize the cutting-edge technologies that Opel designers and engineers have built into the Insignia. The Opel Eye, an innovative front camera with traffic sign recognition and lane departure warning won a Plus X Award, Europe’s largest contest for technology, sports and lifestyle products. The jury was so excited by the Opel Eye front camera that it awarded it the “Seal of quality for innovations.”

Even the Insignia’s Vehicle Line Director Andreas Haefele, was recognized by Automotive News as “2009 Eurostar” for combining product development, design and manufacturing ability “to make the new Insignia a car that would steal buyers from (its) rivals.”

Lightweight Components for Individual Retrofitting on the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS

A Porsche 997 Turbo in Carrara White at Auto E...Image via Wikipedia

Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is offering a new product line for retrofitting motorsport accessories on all Type 997 models of the GT3 and GT3 RS. Using these special components, the enthusiast is able to further customise the exterior of his car with weight-optimised materials such as titanium and carbon also used in motorsport.

These optional accessories have been developed by engineers in Porsche's Motorsport Division in Weissach and naturally tested on the race track. Apart from an unusually sporting look, the new motorsport accessories from Porsche Tequipment offer an even higher standard of driving dynamics.

The new double tailpipe made of titanium, for example, reduces the weight of the car at the rear, the white-metallic patina of the tailpipe turning blue when exposed to high exhaust temperatures, like on many racing cars.

The spoiler lip at the rear (Gurney flap) and the ram air scoop on the rear lid provide a further reduction of weight and add a striking look to the car. Both are made of super-light but extra-stable carbon.

The front air outlet above the bumper and the rear-view mirrors are also available in carbon which, being a very stiff material, enabled Porsche's engineers to choose an even more open structure on the air outlet, this special motorsport component now coming with just one middle bar instead of the usual three reinforcement bars. Yet a further point is that the carbon elements add additional optical highlights particularly on cars finished in a light exterior colour.

The titanium-coloured second-generation 19-inch GT3 wheels complete with central locking are likewise a new feature in the range. The wheel bolts are made of forged aluminium and finished in red eloxy-plating. To customise the first generation of the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS (Type 997), there is also special a model designation in various colours extending round the wheel. The special trim film used for this purpose is made of the same highly resistant material as the starter numbers on racing cars for lasting quality.

All motorsport accessories are available starting immediately in all Porsche Centers worldwide except China.

Bright White and a Big Heart: The Audi Stand at the IAA

Audi corporate logoImage via Wikipedia

  • A celebration of 100 years of Audi with five world premieres in Frankfurt
  • Brand provides insights into electric mobility of tomorrow
  • 34 Audi vehicles across 6,000 square meters in Hall 3.0

For Annkatrin Hentsch, it is akin to “time-lapse construction of a house.” A project manager at AUDI AG, she oversees the setting-up of Audi’s stand at the 63rd International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Following a year of preparations and some 55,000 hours of planning, her IAA team requires just 25 days of setting up to execute a stroke of genius both organizational and logistical in nature: As per a stringent schedule, 90 trucks transport several hundred metric tons of material to Frankfurt, where 300 fitters assemble everything.

The result: a gleaming white stand — 6,000 square meters in size (4,000 at ground level and 2,000 one storey up) — with a dazzling design to showcase 34 perfectly situated Audi vehicles. And this stand truly has a huge heart: In a ventricle not only illuminated via red and white LEDs but also 40 meters long and up to ten meters wide, several exhibits emphasize key Audi innovations such as TDI technology, lightweight design/construction, and Audi history. A chrome-polished R8 will get visitors’ hearts pumping even faster.

Audi’s appearance this year is certainly characterized by its centennial milestone. 55 Audi employees as well as 85 event hostesses/hosts will eagerly provide details to all interested visitors. Five world premieres await guests at the Audi stand. Along with the Audi S5 Sportback, for example, there will be the Audi R8 Spyder (the open version of the mid-engine sports car). The third highlight will be a preview of tomorrow’s electric mobility. Additional pioneering vehicles to be unveiled at Frankfurt’s IAA will be the Audi A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel and the Audi A3 1.2 TFSI.

The Audi stand spans 86 meters in length and 46 meters in width. Some 67 kilometers of cable ensure that everything is properly powered. The lighting truss weighs 39 metric tons and is 8.45 meters above the stand; 1,400 spotlights are suspended from it.

This puts each and every one of the 34 exhibition vehicles in the best possible light. Audi’s trade-show specialists begin planning the configuration of spotlights months in advance and down to the millimeter so that no unwelcome reflections arise and that every perfectly positioned Audi’s colors and contours are perfectly accentuated.

The same applies to the stand’s steel structures, which weigh many tons and are precisely positioned by surveyors who use laser measurements. Everything must be 100 percent perfect. This is due to reasons of not only time but also safety: some 750,000 people are expected to visit the 2009 IAA! Stands must therefore be indisputably sound in design and execution.

Specialists toil night and day on Audi’s IAA stand to adhere to the timetable. For Annkatrin Hentsch and her team, logistics constitute a particularly formidable challenge.

Several hundred metric tons of material must be transported to Frankfurt. And because a vast number of automotive manufacturers are all simultaneously setting up stands in the hall, all deliveries must be meticulously planned. It is precisely stipulated who may deliver what where and when.

Many of the materials required, from Audi pylons to waste baskets, are supplied by Audi’s very own 17,000-square-meter trade-show warehouse in Ingolstadt. Everything that arrives at Hall 3.0 in Frankfurt must be immediately incorporated. There is no place to temporarily store anything. If just one truck arrives late, then the entire timetable is thrown into utter chaos.

Spanning 18,600 square meters, Hall 3.0 will allow all Volkswagen Group brands to present themselves under one roof. Audi’s tastefully austere stand embodies Audi's brand values: sporty, progressive, and sophisticated. The brand with the four rings achieves this thanks to an IAA approach which is every bit efficient as it is award-winning.

Audi has nevertheless managed to execute a trade-show strategy which costs far less than that of its strategic competitors. A considerable amount of the materials Audi uses at a trade show, for example, will not simply be discarded, but rather re-used at future automotive exhibitions. It could be said that Audi relies on a modular trade-show framework — an assembly concept of sorts.

Philosophy of the Stand

In 2009, as in the past, Audi will present itself in gleaming white in Hall 3.0 at the Frankfurt Exhibition Grounds. Audi’s IAA stand is divided into two solitary carcasses, with a multilane road in the middle.

Visitors can access the stand via one of two routes. Visitors who opt for the road will encounter — prominently displayed in the white center lane — a milestone in Audi’s 100-year history: a streamlined Auto Union C racing car. This historic vehicle sets the stage for Audi’s sporty S models. Visitors are guided through the stand by a track of red LEDs with steles, which bring to life one highlight after another from Audi’s celebrated history by means of integrated vehicles and films.

Alternatively, visitors can traverse the stupendous Heart of Audi — which beats red, then white, then red again. The Heart is a perfect stage, with a chrome-polished R8 up and off to the left. In the rather enclosed right side, Audi underpins its brand essence, Vorsprung durch Technik (“progress through technology”), with Heart exhibits: quattro, TDI Engine Technology, Lightweight Design/Construction, and Heritage. The lighting and the Audi heartbeat integrated into the stand’s overall acoustics constitute a readily perceptible driving force throughout the entire stand.

This portal offers visitors an excellent vantage point over the road to the stunning highlight stage, where the R8 Spyder and this year’s show car will be unveiled. These two world premieres will be illuminated by an LED wall — 15 meters in length and up to 5 meters in height, and evocative of an R8’s headlights — which will symbolize Audi’s lighting-design superiority.

The path takes visitors past both world premieres via a public gallery with seats and the efficiency park up to the technology park, in which the Audi brand’s focus on tomorrow is illustrated by means of exhibits and films. The adjacent catered lounges featuring different designs offer clear views of the entire stand and Audi’s spectacular fleet.

Opel begins Ampera development car tests

  • Extended-range electric development cars in testing
  • Electrically-driven family car practical for everyday use
  • Production on target for 2011
  • Rüsselsheim. Opel has begun testing two development cars of the Ampera extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV) at its Dudenhofen proving ground, keeping the revolutionary four-seater on schedule for a late 2011 production date.

Engineers have installed the Ampera’s revolutionary Voltec electric propulsion system – including the battery, motor, engine and electric-generator – inside the body of an existing production car. They call this kind of a development car a mule because, like their name-sake animals, the mules are a mixture of two species. Mule cars helps engineers test technology at an early stage of vehicle development.

Specifically, engineers in Rüsselsheim are testing the Voltec system’s performance and the overall driving impression. In addition, engineers in Mainz-Kastel have developed and are further testing the lithium-ion battery.

“The Ampera development cars show that a practical, electric four-seater, with cargo space and the capability to be the first automobile in the household, is not just theory, but a car that will be reality by 2011,” says Frank Weber, Vehicle Line Executive for Ampera development.

    Development evolves through three stages

The Ampera is being developed in three distinct phases, or mules. The first stage involves the engineering development vehicles, which are used to analyze the behavior of specific subsystems and get them to work together. These are not complete vehicle tests but work to prove individual subsystems.

In the next phase, integration cars are built with all of the systems coming together. They contain a lot of hand built parts, but are "design intent." In the final development stage cars look and operate for all intents and purposes nearly exactly the same as the production cars. This phase brings everything together. All the final aero- and wind tunnel work can be done with them. They are the last phase before production.

Opel Ampera – electric drive for use any day of the week

The five-door, four-seat Opel Ampera uses the ground-breaking electric propulsion technology called Voltec which operates differently from other advanced propulsion system, like a hybrid. This Voltec electric propulsion system uses electricity as its primary power source. A gasoline engine-generator acting as a secondary power source will generate electricity when the battery is depleted to ensure a seamless and continuous drive.

The Ampera’s wheels are turned electrically at all times and speeds. For journeys up to 60 km (MVEG), it runs on electricity stored in the 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery, and emits neither harmful greenhouse gases nor any regulated emissions. The Ampera will be well-suited to the daily driving habits of European customers. For example, approximately 80 percent of German drivers travel less than 50 km a day.

Ampera gives driver confidence and peace of mind

Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Ampera eliminates “range anxiety,” giving the confidence and peace of mind that a depleted battery will not strand the driver.

When the battery’s energy is low, electricity from an engine-generator extends the Ampera’s range to more than 500 km. A gasoline/E85-fueled engine-generator seamlessly provides electricity to power the electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery. This mode of operation extends the range to 500 kilometers until the battery can be charged by plugging the vehicle's on-board charge system into a standard household 230v outlet.

"An advanced lithium-ion battery system is the key to getting the Ampera into the hands of consumers”, said Hans Demant, GME’s vice president of engineering. “The engineers at our research and development center in Mainz-Kastel, Germany are testing the battery around the clock, 365 days a year to ensure that it meets the expectations of our customers.”

More than 220 lithium-ion cells in the T-shaped pack provide ample power. The nearly silent electric drive unit delivers 370 Nm of instant torque, the equivalent of 150 horsepower, zero to 100 km/h acceleration in around nine seconds, and a top speed of 161 km/h.

Opel estimates that an electrically driven kilometer in the Ampera will cost about one-fifth compared to a conventional gasoline vehicle at current fuel prices.

The Ampera can be plugged into any household 230v outlet and is fully re-charged in about three hours. Opel is analyzing the requirements for standardization and a recharging infrastructure for plug-in electric cars with energy companies, including Iberdrola of Spain.

Hamilton needing Monza win to maintain World Championship hopes

With Vodafone McLaren Mercedes generally achieving strong results in the Italian Grand Prix in the past, Lewis Hamilton is hoping that this record continues this year.

Hamilton must win at Monza to realistically keep alive any faint hopes he has of retaining his Formula One World Championship, with him being 45 points off the lead with five races remaining.

And Hamilton feels that all teams will have a tough task at Monza this weekend following the decision to forego testing at the Monza circuit ahead of the race.

He said: "It will take the drivers a bit of acclimatisation to get used to running in low downforce at this high-speed circuit.

"It’s a real challenge to get the set-up right because there’s never an ideal compromise between speed along the straight and through the corners."

A poor tyre choice during qualifying effectively ended Hamilton’s chances of winning the Italian Grand Prix last season, when he went on to finish seventh after starting from 15th on the grid.

Hamilton will also be hoping to recover from failing to finish a race for the first time this season at the recent Belgian Grand Prix.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported August 2009 sales of 24,823 units representing an increase of 11.4 percent over August 2008.

The government sponsored Car Allowance Rebate System, otherwise known as Cash for Clunkers, helped Volkswagen post its best sales month since December 2005. With a full model range of fuel efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles Volkswagen was well positioned for the program. Volkswagen of America's volume model, the Jetta, also posted its best sales month since December 2005 with 12,872 total units. Volkswagen's versatile compact Sport Utility Vehicle, the Tiguan, posted strong August sales results with 1,750 units. CC and Routan also posted extremely strong August results with sales of 1,980 and 2,098 units respectively.

"We are extremely pleased with our August sales results. The government sponsored Cash for Clunkers program was instrumental at sparking the entire auto industry. The fact that Volkswagen currently has more vehicles that attain 25 miles per gallon or better on the highway than any other brand well positioned us to capitalize on the program," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Volkswagen's success in the program is best illustrated by how well our extremely fuel efficient TDI models sold during the program, resulting in virtual sold out situation of our model year 2009 TDI inventory. However, 2010 model year Jetta sedan TDI's are now available in dealer showrooms and Jetta SportWagen TDI's will be available later this month," added Barnes.

Audi sets pricing for 2010 MY A3 TDI® clean diesel

Audi announced pricing for the 2010 A3 TDI, its second U.S. clean diesel offering launched this year. Expected to begin arriving at U.S. dealers in late November 2009, the 50-state certified A3 TDI delivers the highest highway fuel economy in the luxury car category – 42 mpg, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates.

Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (excluding $825 destination charge, taxes, title, options, and dealer charges):
A3 TDI clean diesel with S tronic front wheel drive $29,950

Audi launched its first TDI clean diesel model, the Q7 TDI, earlier this year. The Audi Q7 TDI built awareness with American luxury car consumers that modern clean diesel technology is markedly improved in emissions, quietness, ride comfort and overall performance. Both the A3 TDI and Q7 TDI clean diesel vehicles share several common attributes that include 50-state clean diesel technology, 30% better fuel economy and a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas than gasoline engines of comparable size.

In fact, the EPA calculated that if only one-third of the vehicles on American roads ran on clean diesel, the U.S. would use 1.5 million fewer barrels of oil each day. Audi was the first German car manufacturer to combine turbocharging with diesel engine technology in 1989, and has continued to evolve its technology ever since. Audi Sport has helped prepare the way for TDI clean diesel in the United States by racing the R10 TDI sports car from 2006-2008 in the American Le Mans Series and sweeping the major endurance races at the 12 Hours of Sebring (Sebring, Fla.) and the 10-hour Petit Le Mans (Atlanta, Ga.). In addition, the R10 TDI won all three 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance races in which it competed from 2006-2008. The R15 TDI continued the TDI clean diesel performance tradition by winning the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race in March 2009.

The Audi A3 TDI offers the same sophistication, styling, operating efficiency and ride comfort that has distinguished Audi throughout its model range. Standard amenities include lighted vanity mirrors for drivers and front passengers within the sun visors, leather seating surfaces, cargo nets behind front seats, split folding 40/60 rear seats, rear seat arm rest with dual cup holders. Distinctive options include Audi Navigation plus with RDS traffic, Bluetooth® hands-free phone preparation, Audi music interface (integration for iPod® and related technology), BOSE® premium sound, the Titanium package with dark grey wheels and black grille, leather/alcantara seating, wood trim, rain/light sensors, auto-dimming exterior and interior rear-view mirror with integrated compass, and LED daytime running lights.

The Lexus HS 250h offers similar combined fuel economy with hybrid technology, but not superlative highway mileage range. The A3 TDI offers more superlatives in value, including a standard S line exterior sport appearance for 2010, a tighter steering turning circle, a top speed of 130 mph, as well as a 12-year limited warranty against corrosion.

The Audi approach toward efficiency is not only catered toward TDI clean diesel vehicles. Audi is also the first car company in the United States to equip 100% of its gasoline engines with FSI direct injection technology beginning with model year 2010.

Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has refined the DNA of the 911 to what must be the most supreme standard of class and style in the 911 Sport Classic available to a strictly limited number of very special 911 enthusiasts. Creating this unique model, Porsche is bringing back the tradition of exclusive small series built in very small numbers. The 911 Sport Classic will be presented at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and is limited in production to just 250 cars.

This very special 911 from Porsche Exclusive has been developed over a project period of about three years, with lots of love for detail, catering especially for the most demanding group of genuine aficionados. Porsche Exclusive is Porsche's Specialist Department for the most outstanding customised versions of Porsche cars going beyond even the highest standard of the Company's regular production models.

The unique character of this very special 911 comes out at very first sight in the newly developed double-dome roof. A further highlight of this sports car based on the rear-wheel-drive Carrera S is the wider rear body up by 44 millimetres or 1.73" and the wider track on the rear axle. The striking SportDesign front apron with its unique spoiler lip and the rear spoiler fixed in position like the legendary ducktail on the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 round off the unmistakable look of the 911 Sport Classic. Power comes from Porsche's 3.8-litre with Direct Fuel Injection, increased in this case, also through the introduction of a newly developed resonance intake manifold with six vacuum-controlled switching flaps, by 23 bhp to 408 horsepower for even more outstanding performance.

The 911 Sport Classic comes exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. PCCB Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes ideally reflecting the sporting character of this exclusive 911, PASM sports suspension lowering the entire car by 20 mm or 0.79", as well as the mechanical rear axle differential and custom-made 19-inch wheels with their rim star painted black all come together to offer a perfect match for the character of this most exclusive car.

The very special, highly sophisticated interior of the 911 Sport Classic bears powerful testimony to one of the core competences of Porsche Exclusive and is characterised by new materials never used before even by Porsche. One example is woven leather made up of smooth leather strips and woven yarn featured on the seat centrepieces of the newly designed adaptive sports seats complete with light-grey piping and on the door panels.

The dashboard including a wide range of inserts and add-on components is finished in Espresso Nature natural leather, providing a distinctive contrast to the exclusive body paint in Sport Classic Grey.

Marking the introduction of this special limited edition model, Porsche Design Driver´s Selection is likewise introducing a range of new and very special products at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The limited edition AluFrame Trolley as well as a polo-shirt, a cap and a personalised lanyard take up the colour concept of the 911 Sport Classic, and in good time for the introduction of the new car a top-quality 1:43 model will also be available.

Sales of the Porsche 911 Sport Classic are starting in January 2010.
The Euro base price of the car without value-added tax and national specifications is Euro 169,300.-.

    Mercedes-Benz E500 Coupe

Mercedes Benz E Class Geneva 2009Image by Yo Ghurt via Flickr

The new Mercedes-Benz E500 Coupe is so good that it would be hard to pick a fault if the vehicle was driven around a town with the aim of challenging people to highlight a problem, according to James Martin.

Writing for the Daily Mail, the celebrity chef and car enthusiast remarked that he was reluctant to "give it back" after testing it for a week, with the coupe ticking "so many boxes".

He indicated that despite the Mercedes-Benz E-Class having a 155 miles-per-hour top speed, thanks to its 5.5-litre V8 engine, it was most at home cruising on a motorway.

According to Mr Martin: "The E-Class is meant for cruising. Even going at 70 miles per hour, the cabin is almost completely still and silent.

"That’s when you really know you’re in a modern Mercedes-Benz."

He added that the suspension on the E500 Coupe is "excellent" and provides a motorist with all the confidence they need to "sweep around bends at speed".

Other facts about the vehicle are that it can achieve 25.0 miles per gallon of fuel, while being in tax band L due to its generation of 254g/km of carbon dioxide.
